Inhabit Treehouse: A Serene Catskills Retreat Near New York City
Living in New York City offers a one-of-a-kind lifestyle, but even city lovers sometimes need a quiet place to unwind. Tucked into the scenic town of Woodstock and framed by the Catskills mountain range, the Inhabit Treehouse is a compact, thoughtfully designed retreat that brings guests close to nature while remaining within a couple of hours’ drive of the city. Designed by Antony Gibbon Designs, this elevated cabin blends modest, wood-forward architecture with panoramic views and an intimate, relaxing interior.
Surrounded by dense forest, the treehouse is perched to capture framed views of the mountains and canopy. A natural pond nearby deepens the sense of seclusion and provides a soothing backdrop to the property. The structure itself is modest in scale but generous in atmosphere: warm wood surfaces dominate the interior, creating a cohesive, inviting environment that emphasizes comfort and simplicity.
Inside, the ground level opens into a simple lounge that feels both uncluttered and thoroughly lived-in. The designers prioritized efficiency: storage and circulation are carefully considered so every inch of this small footprint feels intentional. A compact kitchen and breakfast bar serve the living area, and two small balconies flank the kitchen to extend the indoor space outward—perfect for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine while watching the light change over the trees.
The sleeping area is located on a loft level above the living room, using vertical space to its fullest advantage. This loft bedroom is intentionally minimal—cozy and uncluttered—so the focus remains on the sweeping views outside. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows bring the landscape into the interior, bathing the spaces in natural light and creating a constant visual connection with the surrounding forest and mountains.
Though compact, the design comfortably accommodates three to four guests. Thoughtful lighting enhances the tranquil atmosphere, switching between practical illumination for cooking or reading and softer, ambient options for relaxation. Materials are straightforward—primarily wood—so the interior feels cohesive and durable, reinforcing the connection to the site and the landscape beyond.
The Inhabit Treehouse is a study in restraint: instead of adornment or excess, the design emphasizes function, comfort, and connection to place. Architectural decisions—like the loft bedroom, the wraparound glazing, and the two small balconies—are driven by site, views, and a desire to maximize every square foot without creating clutter. The result is a calm, efficient retreat where the rhythm of nature takes center stage.
