We love the transformation of overlooked or underused spaces into welcoming, livable interiors where contemporary design meets practical function. That is exactly what MINIMO achieved with the M02 project: two basement units in Madrid reimagined as bright, elegant apartments that feel much larger than their footprints. Each apartment measures about 45 square meters, yet the thoughtful, partition-free layout and careful selection of materials create a sense of openness and calm that belies the basement setting.
The strategy is simple and restrained: a neutral white backdrop paired with warm birch plywood details. Custom birch plywood décor forms shelving, storage units and built-in furniture throughout the apartments, introducing a tactile warmth that balances the crisp white walls and ceilings. This pared-back palette allows small accents — a green plant, a colored chair or a textured rug — to stand out without overwhelming the compact space.
Rather than rely on bulky modular systems, the design maximizes efficiency with bespoke elements tailored to each apartment’s needs. Furniture and storage elements stop short of the ceiling, which preserves sightlines and prevents the rooms from feeling boxed in. Vertical space is used intelligently: shelves and cupboards are arranged to tuck items away while keeping essentials within easy reach, maintaining a clutter-free atmosphere that contributes to a restful living experience.
Light is a critical component of the design. In addition to the high-contrast pairing of white and birch, a polished stainless steel cabinet serves both an aesthetic and functional role: its reflective surface bounces available light around the rooms, creating additional depth and visual brightness. That reflective quality helps to amplify natural and artificial light sources, making the interiors feel airier and more open.
The partition-free plan is central to the feeling of spaciousness. By limiting rigid room divisions, the layout encourages uninterrupted sightlines from one area to the next, visually expanding the floor area and creating flexible zones that adapt to daily needs. The sleeping area and bathroom are treated as integrated extensions of the main living space rather than isolated compartments, which is an effective strategy in compact urban apartments.
Small decorative moves amplify comfort: a gallery wall provides personality without crowding, an accent chair injects color and liveliness, and a few well-placed plants bring natural texture into the interior. These elements are deliberately restrained so that they enhance rather than compete with the architectural clarity of the apartments.
Overall, the M02 apartments show how careful material choices and spatial planning can entirely transform a basement into a desirable urban home. By focusing on simplicity, warmth and strategic reflections of light, the two units no longer read as subterranean spaces but as thoughtful, modern apartments suited to contemporary city living.
These compact Madrid apartments demonstrate how modest interventions — a cohesive material palette, cleverly designed storage, and reflective surfaces — can dramatically improve comfort and perceived scale.
