Contemporary Cliffside Weekend Retreat with Ocean Views

Till House — A Cliffside Weekend Retreat in Chile

A weekend home should offer a true escape from the everyday—a place to slow down, breathe, and take in striking scenery. Till House, designed by WMR Arquitectos in Chile, does exactly that. Perched on the edge of a rugged cliff, this compact retreat frames dramatic coastal and ocean views, creating a powerful connection between architecture and landscape. Its restrained form and careful material choices—steel framing paired with warm timber interiors—deliver a modern yet inviting aesthetic.

The house is deliberately compact and organized as an open-plan weekend shelter that includes a living area, kitchen, dining space and sleeping quarters. During the day, large glass walls open the interior to sweeping, near-360-degree panoramas of sea and cliff. At night, sliding doors and screens can be closed to provide complete privacy. The interior palette remains intentionally minimal—simple furnishings and natural finishes keep the focus on the view instead of cluttering it.

The architecture balances openness and seclusion. From the ocean-facing side, the residence appears to float on the cliff, maximizing views and exposure to light. From the street, the façade is subdued and blends into the landscape, preserving privacy and minimizing visual impact. This duality—open to the sea, protected from the land—defines the house’s character.

Outdoor living is integral to the design. Terraces wrap the west, north and south sides to capture shifting light throughout the day. A rooftop terrace enjoys full sun and provides a private, elevated space to relax. Where shade is required, timber slats are used to create texture and nuanced shadow patterns, enhancing the sense of depth without obscuring the view.

The detailing emphasizes contrast and clarity: a lightweight steel structure supports warm timber ceilings and floors, producing a crisp yet comfortable interior environment. The kitchen follows that same restrained approach, with wooden cabinets that prioritize function while contributing to the overall warmth of the space.

An exterior wooden cube houses a small Jacuzzi, positioned to face the ocean. This private outdoor amenity enhances the experience of the coast—relaxation with unobstructed sea views becomes part of everyday ritual while staying here.

The house volume measures 6 by 12 meters. Terraces were designed along the west, north and south sides to take advantage of different sun intensities. For these terraces 2″x6″ slats were used, spaced 2″ apart, producing textured shadows. The roof features a terrace that receives full sun.

Till House is a compact, carefully composed retreat: modest in footprint but generous in experience. Its minimal interior treatment, thoughtful material contrasts and terraces that choreograph light and shadow allow the site to remain the protagonist. For anyone seeking a quiet, contemporary getaway with commanding ocean views, this cliffside house demonstrates how economy of form and clarity of detail can produce a memorable and restorative escape.
