It’s easy to fall in love with a beach house — even easier to dream about a picture-perfect retreat poised on the ocean’s edge, where the sound of waves feels almost inside the home. Making that dream a reality, however, requires smart design that addresses practical challenges: exposed winds, shifting soils and salt-laden air can make coastal sites difficult to build on. Feldman Architecture tackled those constraints on a windy Santa Cruz lot with a thoughtful, elegant solution: the Surf House, a modern beach-style retreat that blends indoor and outdoor living while standing up to coastal conditions.
Clad in warm wood on both its exterior and interior, the Surf House achieves a distinctive, cohesive aesthetic. The design combines modern, beach and eclectic influences to create interiors that feel bright, bespoke and inviting. The main living spaces — living room, kitchen and dining area — are arranged in an open plan that flows directly onto a generous deck, blurring the boundary between the house and the outdoors and making it easy to entertain or relax while taking in ocean views.
The real highlight is the expansive rear deck and yard, positioned to maximize views over the Pacific. Large sliding glass doors open the back of the house to the deck so homeowners can enjoy sweeping vistas, ocean breezes and the sensory experience of living near the sea. The design intentionally brings light and air deep into the home while offering sheltered outdoor zones that can be used in varying weather conditions.
Inside, thoughtful details reinforce the coastal character. The kitchen introduces contrast with a darker stone countertop and backsplash that punctuate the otherwise light, wood-clad palette, adding depth and a practical, durable surface for daily use. Functional custom elements — such as a built-in surfboard storage unit at the entrance — not only organize gear but also act as a windbreak, helping moderate conditions at the front door.
Bedrooms continue the warm, wood-focused theme and emphasize connection to the outdoors. Custom lighting and natural materials create cozy, restful spaces that feel integrated with the site. Space-saving solutions such as built-in bunk beds are employed where practical, making the most of compact rooms without sacrificing style or comfort.
Outdoors, comfortable seating, a fireplace and a hot tub on the deck invite long evenings outside, whether for quiet enjoyment or social gatherings. The rear yard is designed as a series of usable outdoor rooms, each oriented to the Pacific and framed by wooden fencing and planting that provide privacy and shelter from prevailing winds. From nearly every vantage point on the property, the ocean remains a visual anchor, reinforcing the house’s identity as a seaside retreat.
Rugs and textiles in coastal hues provide color and comfort against the timber backdrop, reinforcing the house’s beachy, relaxed character while also lending softness and warmth to the open spaces. Photography by Stephen Kent Johnson captures the way the design channels light, views and textures to create a home that feels both intimate and expansive.
Overall, the Surf House demonstrates how careful material choices, functional custom details and an open-plan layout can transform a challenging coastal lot into a welcoming beach retreat. The result is a home that balances durability and comfort while staying closely connected to the sea it celebrates.
