Meia Casa — A Contemporary Home in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil
It is rare to encounter a home like Meia Casa, designed by mf+arquitetos in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. The project pairs contemporary architecture with rich, tactile materials: dark stone cladding, polished surfaces and an intricate wooden framework. From the street façade through the entrance tunnel and into the living spaces and bedrooms, the house reveals a careful balance of restraint and warmth that feels both refined and inviting.
A sheltered entry tunnel leads inward, and at its end a water feature marks the threshold between public street and private interior. The designers use that transition to establish the house’s atmosphere: cooler, darker stone surfaces provide a grounding, earthen base while the wooden lining and ceilings introduce warmth and tactility. The stone cladding that wraps the entry room continues through the interior and becomes a defining visual element.
Inside, custom furnishings and contemporary details are composed alongside regional Brazilian influences and a muted earthen palette. The living room presents polished surfaces and careful material contrasts: the cool, dark stone faces off against the warm grain of wood cladding, while refined finishes add a contemporary edge without overwhelming the composition. Light filters through the wooden framework, creating an intimate yet dynamic atmosphere throughout the day.
The kitchen and dining areas continue the house’s cohesive material language. Dark cabinetry and polished marble surfaces sit comfortably beneath wooden ceilings, and stone walls serve as dramatic backdrops for the dining table. Together these materials produce a layered, sophisticated interior that reads both contemporary and grounded in natural textures.
“Our inspiration begins with architecture and the natural materials we favor. For Meia Casa we pursued a darker, more sober and earthen environment — materials that help cool the space, such as the stone floors, paired with the warmth and contrast of wooden lining. Through these choices we sought to create layered sensations with architecture.”

Throughout the home, well-considered storage, standalone shelving and thoughtfully integrated cabinets maintain visual calm while providing practical function. These elements, combined with the restrained palette of dark stone, wood and earthen hues, result in interiors that feel polished yet comfortable—an atmosphere that some might liken to a refined bachelor pad, but that also suits families seeking contemporary warmth.
Meia Casa demonstrates how a focused material palette and careful architectural gestures can create a memorable home. The interplay of stone and wood, the controlled entry sequence with a tactile water feature, and the subtle use of light all contribute to a residence that feels thoughtfully composed and pleasantly lived-in. The outcome is an architectural statement that is both unique and exceptionally humane.
