This nature-embracing luxury residence by Guz Architects is located in Singapore and is known as the Fish House. The design strategy gradually draws the landscape into the home, creating a seamless relationship between architecture and nature. Wood dominates the textures and color palette throughout the house, a fitting choice for a home set within lush tropical vegetation and oriented toward a bright blue ocean.

At the heart of the ground level is a spa and swimming pool articulated with planted green islands and gentle waterfalls. These water features form living elements within the house, producing reflective surfaces and ambient sound that enhance the sense of calm. Above this water landscape a clear glass living room projects in a cantilevered console, allowing residents to feel suspended above the pool while remaining visually connected to the surrounding greenery and sky.

Light plays a significant role in the Fish House. Carefully placed glazing and expansive glass surfaces flood interiors with daylight, while the lighting design around the water and spa accentuates texture and depth after dark. Slim pilasters and a lightweight structural rhythm create a sense of openness and vertical clarity; the house reads as both airy and grounded, with continuous sightlines that emphasize the connection to landscape and sea.

The roof forms are another defining element. Delicately curved rooflines fold over interiors, their undersides finished in warm wood that reinforces the house’s natural aesthetic. Portions of the roof accommodate planted green roofs, which help integrate the building into the surrounding vegetation, provide additional insulation, and add another layer of landscape visible from above and within.

Inside, wood surfaces and carefully considered material connections create a consistent and calming interior language. The emphasis on natural materials and generous openings encourages ventilation and visual permeability, reducing the boundary between inside and outside. This approach supports an eco-friendly mindset, where landscape, water, light, and structure are composed together to create a comfortable, energy-conscious living environment.

The Fish House offers a private retreat that still celebrates its coastal setting. Views toward the ocean are framed deliberately, creating moments where the intense blue of the sea becomes an integral part of the interior experience. At the same time, the layered planting and water features on the site create a microclimate and a sense of refuge within the tropical landscape.

Overall, the Fish House exemplifies how contemporary architecture can embrace its environment without sacrificing comfort or refinement. Through a restrained material palette, strategic use of glass and timber, and the incorporation of planted roofs and water elements, the design creates a tranquil, sustainable home that responds directly to its tropical context.
