Californian Charm Infuses Spacious Westlake Hills Family Home

Californian style is instantly recognizable for its relaxed coastal vibe, modern lines and a hint of eclectic charm. When a young family of six relocated from California to Austin, they wanted a home that would combine that unmistakable Californian panache with Texan character—comfortable, casual and suited to family life. The house, designed by Mark Ashby Design, achieves that balance. It reads as an open, interactive home where public and private areas are clearly defined, daylight fills the rooms, and a predominantly white backdrop allows color, texture and carefully chosen furnishings to stand out.

White and off-white tones form the primary canvas throughout the interiors, creating a sense of calm and continuity. Against this neutral ground the designers layered in natural materials—wood, stone and soft textiles—to bring warmth and a lived-in feeling. Modern furnishings and occasional bold hues are used sparingly to create visual interest without overwhelming the rooms.

The kitchen is a focal point of family life and demonstrates this restraint. A marble backsplash pairs with polished surfaces in soft gray and white, while the central island in a muted gray-blue draws the eye and anchors the space. Wooden bar stools add tactile contrast and casual seating, making the island both a prep area and a gathering spot. Adjacent to the kitchen, a generous dining area centers around a large oval wooden table. Above it, a custom lighting fixture enhances the room’s personality and defines the family dining zone.

The living area opens up under a dramatic sloped roof with exposed metal ceiling beams that introduce a subtle industrial edge. A centrally located fireplace becomes the heart of this generous space, offering both visual warmth and a natural gathering point for family evenings. Large windows and an open layout allow the interior to connect visually and physically with outdoor areas, enhancing the indoor-outdoor flow that is so characteristic of Californian-influenced homes.

Private rooms lean toward comfort and versatility. The master suite embraces clean, neutral tones with symmetrical bedside lamps that create a calm, balanced retreat. Bathrooms continue the refined palette: a gray powder room features a wallpaper-clad ceiling and a bright blue vanity that injects color and personality, while the master bathroom pairs white fixtures with gray tile to form a serene bathing space centered around a freestanding bathtub.

Children’s rooms burst with energy and playful detail. Bright splashes of blue and red, a cheerful ceiling paper and whimsical accents—such as a small scooter mounted on the wall—create spaces that feel imaginative and fun while still remaining practical for daily use. Thoughtful storage and durable finishes make these rooms adaptable as the children grow.

Outside, an open, spacious deck provides generous seating and an inviting place for outdoor living—ideal for entertaining or relaxed family afternoons. The outdoor area reinforces the home’s indoor-outdoor strategy, extending living space and creating a comfortable hangout that feels both private and connected to the landscape.

Functionality and family-friendly details are woven throughout the plan: generous circulation, adaptable rooms, and a clean, durable material palette that balances style with practicality. The end result is an imaginative, cheerful and highly livable home that brings a touch of California to Austin—combining coastal lightness with Texan comfort, modern design, and an eclectic spirit suited to a busy family.
