Small 1936 Barcelona Renovation Blends Vintage and Modern

NDT.304 Apartment Renovation in Barcelona by MZAM

The NDT.304 Apartment, a 1936 residence in a lively Barcelona neighborhood, has been thoughtfully transformed by MZAM into a modern, light-filled home that still honors its historic character. The renovation blends original architectural details with contemporary finishes to create a layered, visually engaging interior. One of the most striking features is the restored patterned ceiling tiles that recall the building’s past while adding color and contrast to otherwise neutral rooms. Complementing these historic elements are exposed brick sections painted white, polished white walls and warm wooden floors that together form a balanced mix of textures and tones.

At the apartment entrance, a compact, multifunctional storage unit creates a welcoming and highly practical foyer. Custom millwork provides both seating and concealed storage, making the most of a modest footprint while setting the tone for the rest of the home. From here the layout opens into a bright, open-plan living area where a crisp white kitchen becomes the focal point. The kitchen’s clean lines and subtle detailing anchor daily life while maintaining a fresh, minimalist aesthetic.

A deliberate change of flooring helps define the different zones within the open plan: patterned tiles mark the kitchen and dining area while continuous wooden planks soften the living space. This subtle transition visually separates cooking and social areas without interrupting the overall spatial flow. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms are positioned away from the living zone, ensuring privacy and quiet when required.

The interior embraces a relaxed Scandinavian-inspired palette and approach. Neutral tones, natural materials and understated detailing give each room a calm, cohesive feel. Contemporary lighting and thoughtfully chosen fixtures enhance comfort and functionality while preserving the apartment’s airy, uncluttered character. A large mirror in the living room amplifies natural light and creates a greater sense of depth, making the 753-square-foot home feel more spacious than its footprint suggests.

Bedrooms continue the white-and-wood palette with carefully selected organic accents. Custom textiles and a subtle floor mat bring texture and warmth to the sleeping spaces, while the eye-catching ceiling tiles add personality without overwhelming the tranquil scheme. In the smaller bathroom, a compact wooden vanity introduces a natural touch that ties back to the flooring and bedroom furnishings.
