A beautiful British home, originally constructed in the 1930s, was in urgent need of a sensitive and contemporary restoration. Wayside in Surrey demonstrates how a period property can be carefully adapted to suit modern family life while retaining its original character. The project, led by OB Architecture, combines the home’s historic elements with clean, contemporary interventions to create a comfortable, light-filled residence. The redesigned central social zone—visually and spatially linked to the garden—anchors the interior around a generous kitchen and dining area, forming the heart of the refurbished home.
Set on a generous one-acre garden, the house benefits from abundant greenery that enhances the new extension’s connection to the outdoors. A large, modern pool and deck are integrated into a neutral exterior palette that complements the building’s traditional fabric. The interior color scheme stays largely restrained, favoring white and soft neutrals; warm wooden accents in the kitchen, dining area and entrance provide contrast and texture, forming a visual bridge between the original 1930s structure and the new contemporary addition.

The design strategy prioritized openness and flow. Where the original home had several small rooms and unnecessary partitions, the renovation introduced a more open plan that encourages movement and social interaction. Sliding or glazed connections to the garden make the kitchen and dining room feel expansive and bright, turning the outdoor landscape into an extension of the living space. Natural light and sightlines were maximized to make everyday living feel both relaxed and generous.

The kitchen was redesigned to be both practical and welcoming. White cabinetry and clean-lined joinery keep the palette calm while a wooden island and workstation introduce tactile warmth and durability. The dining area is anchored by a large wooden table paired with classic chairs that reference the house’s timeless character, creating a family-friendly, multi-use space for cooking, dining and socializing.

Private rooms were also refreshed with careful attention to proportion and comfort. Bathrooms were modernized with contemporary fixtures and thoughtful details such as a striking metallic bathtub that adds a hint of luxury, while bedrooms—including the master and children’s rooms—were updated to improve storage, natural light and functionality. Throughout, the design preserves original features where possible, maintaining the home’s classic British identity while improving everyday usability.

Outside, the pool deck and terrace use a color palette and materials that harmonize with the house’s exterior. This restrained palette ensures that the landscaping and architecture read as a cohesive whole, enhancing both privacy and aesthetic appeal. The result is a carefully considered family home: historically grounded yet reimagined for contemporary living, with an emphasis on bright, flexible spaces and a strong connection to the surrounding garden.
