Victorian Terrace Extension Adds Space and Smart Storage

Beautiful extensions and thoughtful makeovers strike a careful balance between the homeowners’ wishes and the constraints of the site. At the same time, successful projects honor the history of a house while giving it a confident, contemporary future. Amos Goldreich Architecture achieved that balance in their renovation of a Victorian terraced home in Finsbury Park. The Almington Street House retains its traditional street-facing façade while gaining a clear, modern rear extension that creates a much more inviting and practical family home.

The intervention is concentrated at the rear: a crisp brick-and-glass volume now contains the new kitchen, dining area and main social space, while the original rooms at the front remain largely intact. This approach preserves the character and rhythm of the street elevation and lets the family enjoy a contemporary, light-filled living area that opens directly onto the garden. The extension is understated from the exterior but intensive in its internal refinement, using material contrasts and considered detailing to create a warm, layered interior.

Efficiency and comfort were part of the brief. The new kitchen benefits from passive design measures, underfloor heating, and energy-saving LED lighting that together reduce energy demand and increase occupant comfort throughout the year. Inside, lively color choices—deep blue cabinetry paired with a bold pink backsplash—bring personality and contrast to a neutral palette of exposed brick and warm timber shelves. Rooflights introduce daylight deep into the plan, and a selection of pendant lights helps to define different zones while enhancing the room’s cheerful, relaxed atmosphere.

The design cleverly integrates new storage solutions and flexible furniture arrangements so the space works for everyday family life. A built-in window seat provides a comfortable nook for reading and relaxation while also contributing to an efficient layout that avoids clutter. Dark, sculptural pendants introduce visual contrast and help to anchor the dining and kitchen areas against the lighter tones of timber and brickwork.

This project offered the opportunity to bring so much creative thinking to the table – we wanted to create something homely, functional, and family-orientated, but with a strong design sense throughout which really elevates the scheme from a refurbishment to a ‘transformation’. It just shows that you don’t need a huge budget or masses of space to create a beautiful and unique home.

Material choices are honest and complementary: the exposed brick ties the new work to the original building fabric, while timber shelving and joinery introduce texture and warmth. The combination of old and new makes for an interior that feels both grounded and contemporary. The result is a cost-conscious transformation that significantly improves circulation and daily living without compromising the house’s heritage presence on the street.

Almington Street House demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a modest Victorian terrace into a lively, efficient family home. By focusing the new interventions at the rear, the project preserves the street’s heritage while delivering contemporary living amenities, generous daylighting, and practical low-energy systems—an elegant and sensible approach to urban renovation.
