Modular Hotel in Uruguay Wine Region Showcases Modernist Design

Sacromonte Landscape Hotel Shelters by MAPA in Uruguay

When you need to escape the ordinary, a stay that blends architecture with nature can feel like the perfect remedy. The Sacromonte Landscape Hotel Shelters, designed by MAPA, offer exactly that: a collection of thoughtfully placed cabins that celebrate the exceptional landscape of El Edén in Departamento de Maldonado, Uruguay. Set within wine country, the project comprises 13 individual units—four shelters and nine landscape shelters—scattered across the rolling Sacromonte terrain to preserve privacy and allow each guest to feel immersed in the surroundings.

From the exterior, some of the cabins are clad with reflective glass panels that act like one-way mirrors, allowing guests to enjoy unobstructed views while remaining visually discreet from the outside. Combined with stone and timber elements, these modular units achieve a warm, rustic character while maintaining a contemporary, refined silhouette. The prefabricated components, assembled using local materials and vernacular references, allow the cabins to sit lightly on the land and visually integrate with vineyards, grasslands, and surrounding vegetation.

Inside, open-plan living spaces combine kitchen, dining, and lounge areas with carefully positioned reading nooks and seating that frame the landscape as an extension of the interior. Large glazed surfaces maximize daylight and views, while natural finishes—timber floors, stone walls, and muted textiles—create a cozy, understated atmosphere. The cabins are designed to be both comfortable and unobtrusive: modern conveniences and a refined aesthetic coexist with the peaceful rhythms of the outdoors.

Environmental considerations are integrated into the design. Green roofs help the cabins blend into the hillside while offering better thermal performance, and energy-efficient appliances reduce resource use. Small vegetable gardens provide fresh produce for guests and reinforce the project’s connection to place and seasonality. Outdoors, a circular pool and timber deck create a sculptural focal point and a tranquil setting for relaxation, while terraces and pathways weave the cabins into the topography without overwhelming it.

In this idyllic landscape, young vineyards adapted to the unique characteristics of its soil interact with a hill from which the entire spot may be observed—lush grasslands, natural spring water reservoirs, and streams that run through a valley surrounded by pristine vegetation. It is the contemporary explorer who will rewrite their own script, co-starring the landscape while walking through diverse and changing scenarios.

The sensory experience of the Sacromonte shelters is deliberate: reflective facades capture light and sky, while interior palettes and textures ground occupants in comfort. At the same time, the cabins maintain a low environmental footprint by prioritizing prefabrication, local sourcing, and strategies that reduce energy demand. Each unit feels private and remote, yet thoughtfully connected to communal services and shared outdoor amenities.

Guests can enjoy slow, restorative days roaming vineyard paths, taking in wide valley views, or relaxing on private terraces with a glass of local wine. The project emphasizes an intimate, sensory connection to the land rather than spectacle: careful siting, minimalist interiors, and a clear focus on the landscape as the main attraction.

Architecturally, the Sacromonte project demonstrates how contemporary design can be sensitive to context. The combination of reflective surfaces, natural materials, and sustainable strategies results in cabins that are both visually striking and respectful of the site. For visitors seeking a quiet, nature-first retreat in Uruguay’s wine country, these shelters provide a carefully crafted balance of comfort, design, and landscape immersion.
