Bothell Home Renovation: A Modern, Neutral Makeover for Living and Dining Spaces
Most contemporary renovations follow a familiar script: homeowners expand into the backyard, open up floor plans and modernize finishes. This Bothell residence, located in a busy Seattle neighborhood, took a different path. A family of three lived in the house with interiors that had seen little change since the 1980s. The living room had been defined by a dated fireplace and a dark backdrop. The homeowners asked ULLE Studio to reimagine the space, creating a quieter, more elegant living area finished in neutral tones.
The transformation begins with the fireplace. The former, heavy hearth was replaced by a sleek modern surround that reads lighter and more refined. A large flat-screen television sits above the new mantel, integrating entertainment and architecture without overwhelming the room. Where a forgotten alcove once sat unused, a custom-built wooden cabinet now tucks neatly into the corner. The unit provides concealed storage, a surface for display, and a lower shelf sized for neatly stacked firewood—an elegant solution that keeps the living area organized and visually calm. A leather sectional and a simple, sculptural coffee table complete the seating zone, offering comfortable seating while echoing the neutral palette.
Changing the backdrop color palette plays a crucial role in the new character of the space. Subtle, neutral walls and layered textures brighten the living room and make it feel more open and inviting. The design preserves the generous glass doors along one side of the room, allowing natural light to remain a focal asset of the plan. On the opposite side, the dining area was refreshed to coordinate with the living zone while offering its own identity: a large piece of wall art now anchors the dining space and becomes its visual centerpiece.
The renovation was deliberately budget-conscious yet design-driven: instead of a large structural addition, the project focused on targeted interventions that deliver maximum impact. A few smart moves—new finishes, custom built-ins in underused areas, and a restrained furniture selection—created a cohesive, contemporary home without an extravagant price tag. The approach underscores how careful planning and thoughtful choices can transform a dated interior into a modern, livable environment.
Details such as the custom wooden credenza, carefully chosen lighting, and the large wooden dining table reinforce the home’s new language: warm materials, restrained color, and purposeful storage. The addition of textured surfaces—leather, wood grain, soft textiles and curated art—adds depth and contrast within the neutral scheme so the rooms feel layered rather than flat. The result is a comfortable, contemporary home that respects the original footprint while offering a clear visual and functional upgrade.
In sum, the Bothell renovation demonstrates how selective updates—new finishes, built-in storage, and a cohesive neutral palette—can modernize an older home without extensive construction. The result is a brighter, more contemporary living and dining area that balances practicality with a refined aesthetic.
