At first glance, this striking home feels like a quiet retreat tucked away from the rush of a major city. In reality, Blackburn House sits on a leafy, secluded lot in Melbourne and offers a calm, private sanctuary within an urban fabric. Designed by ArchiBlox, the house responds directly to the natural slope of the site and the stand of gum trees that frame it. Those landscape elements informed the residence’s distinctive form, including the dramatic cantilevered upper level that appears to float above the ground floor.

The home’s exterior is deliberately dark and sculptural, creating a bold contrast with the bright, modern interiors. The ground floor is organized into two wings: one accommodates the open-plan living, kitchen and dining areas, while the opposite wing contains a family room, a study, an additional bedroom and supporting utility spaces. Above, the cantilevered top floor is reserved for private bedrooms and retreat areas, ensuring separation between communal and private zones. A generous lower-level deck visually and physically extends the interior outward, encouraging a strong indoor–outdoor connection.
At the center of the plan, a double-height void acts as the home’s organizing element. This vertical space increases natural ventilation, allows daylight to penetrate deep into the interior and gives the interiors a greater sense of volume and openness. That central void, together with carefully placed glazing and sliding doors, helps the house feel both sheltered and spacious—a measured response to the dense urban surroundings.
The kitchen reinforces the house’s refined contemporary character by pairing natural timber details with dark cabinetry and crisp white countertops. An island with open shelving creates a focal point for meal preparation while offering practical storage and display. Nearby, a compact laundry sits adjacent to the kitchen for convenience. Throughout the home, warm wood tones soften the darker accents and add tactile richness to quiet reading nooks, the home workspace and the bedside areas that feature minimalist floating tables and pendant lighting.
Sensitive to the existing landscape, the design minimizes disturbance to the gum trees and retains the generous greenery that surrounds the lot. That restraint allows the trees and native planting to remain the defining backdrop for the residence, screening it from neighboring properties and traffic, and providing residents with a daily sense of privacy and calm. Thoughtful material choices and a careful plan give occupants a protected retreat from the city without feeling disconnected from the natural setting.
The interiors combine clear, functional planning with subtle, layered detailing: dark floor-to-ceiling shelving makes a visual statement while creating useful storage; textured rugs introduce three-dimensional patterning to living areas; and large sliding glass doors with dark frames link the living rooms directly to the timber deck. These measured details promote easy living while maintaining a cohesive, modern aesthetic.

In essence, the uniqueness of this site within such a built up urban context was a pleasure to work with. Escaping the bustle of contemporary life and the noise of traffic down alleyways lined with trees and roofed with leaves was a joy. We only had the opportunity to touch this environment briefly but it has left lasting impressions on all of our team members who came into contact with it. It must be a joy to live with daily.
