Nestled in the heart of London, the Clerkenwell Warehouse Loft underwent a sensitive and stylish renovation by the design studio InsideOut. This 2,583-square-foot apartment restores the building’s original industrial character while introducing contemporary comforts and clever spatial planning. The renovation peels back later alterations to reveal the concrete shell, transforming raw structural surfaces into the defining feature of the home.
Concrete is the undeniable centerpiece of the loft. Large expanses of exposed concrete walls and ceilings celebrate the structure’s industrial past while creating a neutral backdrop for contemporary furnishings and finishes. The open-plan living area was intentionally laid out to highlight these surfaces, allowing textured walls and the dramatic ceiling with exposed beams to become architectural focal points. Track lighting mounted along the beams provides targeted illumination and reinforces the loft’s modern-industrial aesthetic.
Natural light floods the space through large, industrial-style windows, softening the concrete textures and creating contrast with warm timber flooring. The design keeps sightlines open and palettes restrained—mostly gray, white and natural wood tones—to preserve visual continuity and to let materiality take center stage. Against this calm, bespoke joinery and modern fittings introduce refinement and functionality where needed.
The architects and designers introduced a series of smart insertions to upgrade the apartment’s program without erasing its character. Carefully planned joinery and storage elements create two new bedrooms, a contemporary kitchen, a dedicated TV room and generous guest and family spaces. These modern additions are finished in soft grays and whites with clean lines, providing a quiet counterpoint to the loft’s rugged concrete envelope.
In the transition from the raw industrial living zone to the refined, contemporary additions, the palette lightens and the detailing becomes more polished. A contemporary kitchen anchors one end of the open plan with a white island and gray cabinetry that echo the loft’s overall neutral scheme. Custom storage modules and concealed joinery maintain clutter-free spaces and enhance everyday livability without detracting from the exposed structure.
Throughout the apartment, materials and finishes are carefully balanced. Warm timber floors counter the cool tone of concrete, while soft textiles and curated furniture pieces introduce comfort and scale. Thoughtful lighting design, from track systems in the main living area to subtle task lighting in the kitchen and bedrooms, creates layered atmospheres suited to both everyday life and entertaining.
Small, custom interventions—built-in storage, integrated media units and carefully positioned partitions—maximize functionality while preserving the loft’s open, airy feel. The resulting home feels exceptional, tranquil and revitalized: an urban oasis that honors Clerkenwell’s industrial past even as it meets contemporary expectations for comfort and convenience.
