Designed by Skylab, the Owl Creek Residence was conceived as a shared getaway for two families. The layout emphasizes generous common areas that accommodate gatherings, quiet retreats, and shared holiday rituals. Its site-facing orientation makes Snowmass Mountain and the wider Rocky Mountain range a visual centerpiece. As seasons shift, the views change dramatically—each bringing new colors, textures, and atmospheres that help the house feel alive and in conversation with its surroundings.
Glass is used extensively so the outdoors is visually present throughout the interior and natural daylight floods the spaces—an intentional decision strongly favored by the owners. Large openings and well-positioned glazing invite those sweeping mountain vistas into living rooms, dining areas, and private nooks, while carefully framed views create moments of pause and connection with the landscape.
Design and materials
The residence deliberately moves beyond stereotypical alpine clichés while maintaining a warm, wood-rich interior palette. Clean lines and bold geometric shapes define the exterior, while a combination of polished glass, steel, stone, and timber inside and out creates a sophisticated yet inviting material dialogue. Wood softens the modern vocabulary, lending tactile warmth and continuity through floors, walls, and select furnishings.
Interior spaces and social zones
Double-height living areas open directly onto decks, encouraging an easy flow between inside and out. Multiple levels create distinct social zones—ideal for conversations, games, movie nights, and quiet reading sessions. A dramatic fireplace serves as a central focal point in the main living room, drawing people together and reinforcing the cozy, lodge-like ambiance despite the house’s modern aesthetic.
The kitchen and dining areas emphasize simplicity and functionality, using a restrained palette to keep the focus on views and shared experiences. Nearby, a practical mudroom supports active mountain life—providing storage for gear, a transition space for wet or snowy clothing, and easy access to outdoor recreation.
Unique amenities—such as a triangular pool, tiered home theater seating, and a series of decks carved into the slope—reinforce the house’s role as a social destination. The triangular pool becomes both a sculptural element and a way to engage with the topography, while the stadium-style theater provides a dedicated space for communal entertainment.
Exterior and landscape relationship
The exterior language—wood cladding, stone accents, and crisp metal lines—allows the house to sit confidently within the hillside while also blending into its natural context when viewed from certain angles. Decks and terraces are positioned to capture sweeping panoramas and to extend living areas outward, creating places to enjoy sunrise and sunset over the Rockies.
