Bookshop-Born Coastal California Home Inspired by Aussie Design

Inspiration often arrives in unexpected places. For the homeowners of the striking Seaside Reef Residence in California, a chance meeting in a bookshop with Alec of Alec Petros Studio sparked the concept for this relaxed, spacious coastal home. The design blends California and Australian influences on its façade, where a continuous rhythm of wooden slats defines the exterior. A simple but effective system of vertical cedar boards paired with a horizontal sleeper framework gives the house its warm, textured look.

The cedar-clad exterior reads as both natural and resilient: it gives the house a relaxed, beachside presence while standing up to humid coastal winds and salt air. Over time the cedar will develop a soft patina that enhances the home’s organic character. Inside, the transition between outdoors and living spaces is intentionally seamless. A restrained palette of white, warm wood tones and soft bluish-grays unifies the living room, kitchen and dining area, creating a calm backdrop that keeps the focus on light, texture and the views beyond.

Generous glazing, sliding glass doors and carefully placed openings ensure that daylight and ocean breezes penetrate deep into the floor plan. The living area can fully open to the outside so interiors and exterior decks read as one continuous space. This approach supports indoor-outdoor living, a hallmark of coastal architecture, and makes the home feel larger and more connected to the landscape.

The outdoor living areas are carefully composed to extend the interior program. A pool and adjacent deck become an active extension of the kitchen and dining zones, so cooking, entertaining and relaxing can flow effortlessly between inside and out. Simple furnishings such as butterfly chairs create intimate places to sit and enjoy the breeze, the view and the rhythm of coastal life.

Inside the kitchen, light bluish-gray cabinetry provides a subtle contrast to white surfaces and natural wood elements, anchoring the palette without overpowering it. The overall material selection favors durability and easy maintenance—an important consideration in a seaside setting where wind, salt and humidity are constant factors.

The bathroom leans toward a refined, spa-like aesthetic. Natural stone and marble finishes create a sense of luxury while robust dark stone flooring grounds the space. A large freestanding bathtub becomes the focal point, and custom vanity details complete the composition. These choices balance visual richness with practical performance for a coastal home.

The primary bedroom is designed as a restful retreat, with expansive glazing and a small balcony that frame distant ocean views. Large windows and glass walls bring the horizon into the room, offering a daily reminder of the seaside setting and reinforcing the house’s emphasis on calm, light-filled interiors.

Overall, the Seaside Reef Residence balances a refined material palette with the relaxed functionality expected of a coastal home. Thoughtful details, durable finishes and a strong connection to the outdoors produce a living environment that feels both casual and considered—an ideal backdrop for enjoying the coastal landscape and everyday life beside the sea.
