Flamengo Apartment: A Space-Savvy Modern-Industrial Renovation by Nop Arquitetura
The first apartment you move into after gaining independence holds a special place in memory, and the renovated Flamengo Apartment in Brazil is a perfect example. Reworked by Nop Arquitetura for its owner in his 30s, this compact flat was refreshed with a smarter floor plan and a calm contemporary palette. The redesign created an additional bathroom, enlarged the master suite, and balanced efficient organization with a modern-industrial aesthetic that feels relaxed and functional.
Design Strategy and Visual Language
The project emphasizes a restrained gray-and-white backdrop enlivened by warm wood tones and varied textures. Chevron-pattern wooden flooring brings movement to the layout, while polished gray walls and white ceilings establish a neutral canvas. Dark-framed glass doors and sliding partitions introduce an industrial edge that visually separates zones without closing them off. Boiserie details, metallic shelving and woody porcelain tiles add layered interest so the interior reads as contemporary yet tactile.
Materials, Textures and Atmosphere
Combining several materials was central to the apartment’s mood. Warm wood flooring contrasts with polished gray surfaces, and white ceilings keep the rooms feeling open. Metal shelving in the living room and dark-framed glass doors contribute to the modern-industrial vocabulary while custom cabinets and built-in storage maintain a clean, organized look. Strategically placed indoor plants introduce a touch of greenery that softens the harder finishes and improves the sense of comfort.
Reworked Floor Plan and Improved Functionality
The architects rethought circulation and allocation of sanitary areas to increase usability. Originally the apartment had one suite and a social bathroom serving the living area and the second bedroom. Through subtle plan adjustments, a rarely used service bathroom was converted into a dedicated toilet for guests, and the social bathroom was transformed into a second suite. As a result, the renovated apartment now offers two suites plus a social toilet—a decisive upgrade for a young owner seeking comfort and flexibility.
Originally, the property had a suite and a social bathroom, which served the living room and the second bedroom. The architects managed, with adjustments to the plan, to transform the little-used service bathroom into a toilet, and to convert the social bathroom into a suite. With that, after the renovation, the apartment now has two suites, in addition to the toilet, which now serves the social area.
Kitchen, Laundry and Spatial Efficiency
The kitchen is compact but organized, with careful attention to storage and appliance placement. Dark-framed folding doors allow it to be visually connected to the living area while giving privacy when needed. Architects found room for a laundry unit within the kitchen footprint, maximizing functionality without sacrificing circulation. Custom cabinetry throughout the apartment continues the efficient approach, providing integrated solutions that keep the interior tidy and visually cohesive.
Bedrooms and Built-In Storage
Bedrooms were reconfigured to prioritize comfort and storage. The enlarged master suite benefits from added built-in cabinetry that optimizes floor area and keeps the layout uncluttered. The second suite, created from the former social bathroom, gains privacy and improved functionality—an important consideration for a young owner who may entertain guests or need a separate workspace. Wood tones and soft finishes in sleeping areas create a restful atmosphere that contrasts with the home’s industrial accents.
Conclusion: A Calm, Efficient Urban Home
The Flamengo Apartment demonstrates how a thoughtful renovation can transform a small flat into a highly livable urban home. By reworking sanitary areas, adding storage, and pairing neutral surfaces with warm wood and industrial details, Nop Arquitetura created a layout that feels both modern and welcoming. Natural ventilation and careful material choices further contribute to a comfortable everyday experience, making this renovation a model for space-conscious design in the city.
