Vintage brass mirrors are not everyone’s preference—some people favor minimal or modern aesthetics—but their current revival offers a wealth of ideas if you enjoy antique-inspired décor. Before you begin this DIY, spend some time browsing images and deciding the size, orientation (standing or hanging), and shape (rectangular or oval) that best suits your space. For this project we used a rectangular mirror, but the same techniques apply to other shapes.

Authentic brass mirrors can be heavy and expensive, so we designed an affordable, lightweight alternative you can assemble with items from craft and dollar stores. With a few coats of metallic spray paint, some decorative appliqués, and basic adhesives, you can create a convincing faux brass frame that looks elegant without the weight or cost of solid metal. Below you’ll find a concise supply list and step-by-step directions to guide you through the process.

Supply List

  1. Wooden decals or appliqués (four corner pieces plus one flat onlay)
  2. Framed mirror (rectangular or oval, new or repurposed)
  3. Metallic brass or gold spray paint
  4. Painter’s tape
  5. Newspaper or cardboard for masking and protecting surfaces
  6. Strong wood glue or multi-purpose adhesive
  7. Utility knife or razor blade for trimming

Clear a well-ventilated workspace and set aside a clean area where painted pieces can dry undisturbed.

Step 1

Cover the mirror glass completely with cardboard or newspaper and seal the edges with painter’s tape so only the frame remains exposed. Always spray-paint outdoors or in a ventilated area with minimal wind to avoid overspray. Masking the glass carefully helps protect the reflective surface from paint.

Tip: Spray paint can find the tiniest gaps in your masking. If paint mist lands on the glass, wait until it dries and then use the flat edge of a razor blade held at a shallow angle to carefully remove the flecks without scratching the surface.

Step 2

Apply an even coat of metallic spray paint to the exposed frame. Hold the can about 15–20 cm from the surface and spray with smooth, sweeping motions to prevent drips. Paint the wooden appliqués in the same manner. Place painted parts in a warm, dust-free area to dry completely before handling.

Tip: Wear disposable or rubber gloves and use wooden skewers or kitchen tongs to move small pieces while the paint is still tacky—this keeps fingerprints and smudges off the fresh finish.

Step 3

Once the paint has dried, lay out your wooden appliqués on the frame to finalize their placement. This loose arrangement helps you visualize proportions and symmetry before fixing anything permanently. When you’re satisfied with the layout, spread a thin, even layer of wood glue across the back of each piece.

Step 4

Press the glued appliqués firmly onto the frame in your chosen configuration. Wipe away any excess adhesive immediately with a damp cotton swab or soft cloth; removing glue before it dries will keep the finish clean. Allow the glue to cure fully according to the manufacturer’s directions before moving, hanging, or styling the mirror.

Step 5

Style the finished mirror and capture a photo. Consider pairing it with vintage postcards, small framed artworks, houseplants, or a decorative lamp to enhance the antique character. The lightweight construction makes this piece ideal for apartments, rental walls, or rooms where you want the look of vintage brass without heavy hardware or professional installation.
