If you want to bring a relaxed boho vibe into your bedroom or any room in your home, macrame is an easy and stylish way to do it. While macrame saw popularity in the 1970s, it remains a fresh and modern choice for contemporary interiors. This beginner-friendly DIY knot & tassel hanging wall decor project uses only a simple knot and a handful of basic supplies. You can personalize the color palette, adjust the size, and experiment with patterns to create a unique macrame wall hanging that complements your space.

Supply List

  1. EcoCosy thick yarn (or any chunky cotton yarn)
    • Suggested colors: cream, yellow, and grey-blue. Choose shades that match your room.
  2. Stick, driftwood, or wooden dowel about two feet long
  3. Two embroidery hoops, 6–8 inches each
  4. Scissors

Overview

This project builds a layered tassel tapestry on a wooden stick, with a back layer of long cream tassels, a mid layer of yellow tassels attached to an embroidery hoop, and a top layer of grey-blue tassels attached to a second hoop. The technique uses a single simple knot to secure folded lengths of yarn into tassels and to attach them to the stick and hoops. The finished piece creates depth and texture and can be scaled up or down depending on the length of yarn and size of your dowel or stick.

Step 1: Prepare the yarn

Start by measuring and cutting your yarn. Place one end of a yarn strand against the stick or dowel and measure until you reach your desired finished length. The first color you choose (cream in this example) will be the longest layer. Fold the yarn in half to create a doubled strand, then cut. It’s helpful to cut pieces slightly longer than you think you need; you can always trim excess later but cannot add length after cutting.

Tip: Cut slightly longer pieces to allow for adjustments. You can trim but you can’t add length once cut.

Step 2: Cut all pieces

Measure and cut the remaining yarn in your chosen colors. For the example shown, the team used:

  • 66 cuts of cream yarn at 86 inches each
  • 36 cuts of yellow yarn at 54 inches each
  • 24 cuts of grey-blue yarn at 38 inches each

Adjust these quantities and lengths to suit your preferred scale and density.

Step 3: Group the strands

To maintain a full, textured look, group the doubled yarn cuts into bundles. For the cream layer, separate the pieces into groups of six strands. That should yield approximately 11 sections for a two-foot stick, but spacing depends on how dense you want the back layer to be.

Step 4: Attach the first tassels

Begin in the center of the stick with a cream section. Fold the group in half to form a loop, place the loop under the stick, then pull the loose ends up and through the loop to create a lark’s head knot. Pull snug to secure the tassel around the dowel.

Step 5: Continue across the stick

Repeat the lark’s head knot with the remaining cream sections, working outward from the center so the back layer is evenly distributed.

Step 6: Add the mid and top colors

After the cream layer is secured, attach two sections of yellow yarn on each side of the cream, using the same knotting technique. Follow those with two sections of grey-blue yarn on each side to frame the center. This builds the base texture before attaching the hoops.

Step 7: Attach the first hoop

Tie one embroidery hoop to the center of the stick using a short length of cream yarn so the hoop hangs below the stick. Secure it tightly so it stays aligned as you add tassels.

Step 8: Add tassels to the hoop

Divide the yellow yarn reserved for the hoops into groups of four strands, fold them in half, and attach them to the hoop with the same knot method. Work from the center outward so the yellow layer creates a neat ring of tassels around the hoop.

Step 9: Position and connect the second hoop

Place the second embroidery hoop beneath the first so the top of the lower hoop aligns with the center of the upper hoop. The bottom half of the lower hoop should sit behind the yellow tassels. Use a short piece of grey-blue yarn on each side to tie the two hoops together and stabilize the arrangement.

Step 10: Finish the top hoop

Attach the remaining grey-blue yarn to the top half of the second hoop so those tassels hang in front of the yellow layer. This creates the layered, dimensional look that makes the piece visually interesting.

Step 11: Prepare for hanging

To hang the piece, tie a long piece of yarn around both ends of the stick to form a hanger. Use an appropriate wall hook or nail to hang your macrame safely on the wall.

Step 12: Adjust and tighten

Once the piece is hanging, go through and tighten each knot on the tassels so everything sits evenly. Make small adjustments to spacing and tension so the tassels fall neatly.

Step 13: Trim the tassels

After tightening, trim the tassel ends to refine the overall shape. For the cream back layer, cut into a point starting from the center bottom and trimming upward on each side to create a symmetrical V shape.

Step 14: Final shaping

Repeat the trimming pattern on the top two layers, shaping and adjusting until you reach a balanced design and the length you like. Take your time shaping each layer so the overall composition reads well from a distance.
