Mexican Beach House Transformed into Secluded Hillside Retreat

SJAIII: A Coastal Retreat That Blends with the Landscape in San Juan de Alima, Mexico

We often shape the world to suit our needs and forget the quiet beauty of living in harmony with nature. Busy cities and towering skyscrapers lack the charm of a modest home nestled among foliage and rock. SJAIII, a contemporary beach house by CDM Casas de México, embraces a nature-centered design philosophy. Situated just steps from the surf and overlooking the rugged coast of San Juan de Alima, Mexico, this residence is a mesmerising retreat that seamlessly becomes part of its surroundings.

Perched on a lush, rocky coastal lot, the house welcomes the outdoors inside. Vegetation and vines grow over parts of the façade, and rocky outcrops form natural thresholds that guide visitors toward the interior. The pool is conceived as an extension of the coastline: shaped and finished to resemble a tide pool that gathers water among large stones, it reads as a natural pond rather than a conventional swimming pool. The result is both poetic and carefully executed.

The main living spaces — the open living area, kitchen and dining room — feel like a sheltered deck that gently extends outward to meet the pool and landscape. Large openings frame panoramic views and allow the sounds of the ocean to filter through, so interior and exterior spaces operate as one. Natural materials such as cedar and stone provide tactile warmth and visual continuity, while contemporary comforts ensure everyday living remains comfortable and functional.

The house’s pavilion-like organization promotes open circulation and a strong connection to the site. Sweeping communal areas open directly to terraces and decks, creating places to gather while always remaining connected to the landscape. From both public and private rooms, residents enjoy uninterrupted ocean views and shifting coastal light that animates the interiors throughout the day.

Material choices are integral to the house’s character. Cedar surfaces, exposed stone walls and timber elements evoke the local landscape and age gracefully. These materials create a calm, grounding atmosphere that complements the dramatic coastal setting. The architecture avoids competing with the site; instead it frames and enhances views, while vegetation softens edges and integrates the home into the hillside.

Designed to be both private and open, the residence balances intimate spaces with expansive outlooks. Bedrooms and quieter areas enjoy sheltered positions that still capture sea breezes and natural light. The layout emphasizes visual and physical continuity with the site while providing refuge from the elements when needed.

The pool’s design is particularly noteworthy: it reads as an organic feature carved into the rockscape, reinforcing the sense that the home is an extension of the coastline. Pool edges, materials and surrounding planting are composed to feel natural, creating quiet pockets for relaxation and contemplation, with the surf always in the background.

Every element of SJAIII is aimed at preserving the spirit of place. From the rocky, secluded entrance to interiors finished in stone and timber, the design prioritises simplicity, durability and a strong relationship to the coast. The house reads as a refuge and vantage point: a place to observe weather and light, to listen to waves, and to inhabit the land with sensitivity and restraint.

In short, SJAIII exemplifies a design approach that values subtlety over spectacle. It celebrates material authenticity, landscape integration and the quiet pleasures of coastal living. The result is a contemporary home that feels rooted in place and crafted to reveal the best of the shoreline setting.
