Navy Blue and Brass Revitalize a Traditional Shaker Kitchen

Some colors surge in popularity for a season or two and then fade away, while others remain timeless. Blue belongs to the latter group: a versatile hue that works across styles, eras and tastes. As we move into the cooler months, kitchens in blue continue to feel fresh and relevant. One particularly refined example is a recent project by Shape, a kitchen that balances tradition and modernity with confident elegance.

This kitchen is a study in contrasts handled with restraint. Deep navy joinery wraps the space in a rich, enveloping tone while classic shaker-style cabinet fronts provide an enduring, handcrafted look. Polished brass handles introduce a touch of warmth and sparkle, elevating the overall palette without overpowering it. One wall remains painted crisp white, which brightens the room and gives the darker cabinetry room to breathe, while the opposite side features exposed brick that adds texture and an industrial edge. The result is a carefully layered composition where materials and tones complement one another.

The large central island, painted the same deep blue as the surrounding cabinetry, anchors the layout and provides generous workspace. A white marble countertop introduces a subtle, cool contrast that keeps the island feeling light despite its dark paint. Hidden storage and clever internal fittings—oak drawer inserts and tailored compartments—maximize functionality while preserving a clean visual line. Slim bar stools slide neatly beneath the breakfast bar to conserve space, and antique brass detailing on the island ties back to the cabinet hardware for a cohesive finish.

Lighting plays a key role in unifying the different surfaces and finishes. A set of black pendant lights from Tom Dixon hangs above the island and dining area, their sculptural forms casting warm pools of light in the evenings. By day, a skylight and large sliding glass doors flood the room with natural light, softening the navy tones and highlighting grain in the oak shelving. Open wooden shelves in oak provide display space and introduce an organic warmth that contrasts nicely with the industrial brick and cool marble.

Practicality is clearly built into the design. The island doors swing open to reveal deep storage, organized with oak internals and smart drawer inserts that keep cookware and utensils tidy. A custom-designed workstation and tailored drawers ensure everyday tasks are easy to manage, while the layout allows the kitchen to function smoothly as both a cooking area and a social hub. The careful attention to joinery and proportion gives every element a bespoke quality.

Sliding glass doors open the kitchen to the outdoors and draw daylight deep into the space, while the skylight further amplifies natural illumination. In the evening, pendant lighting defines zones and creates an intimate atmosphere. Small details — like the antique brass panel beneath the breakfast bar and the coordinated hardware across all the cabinetry — bring cohesion to the varied materials and finishes. The overall effect is both modern and comforting, a kitchen built to be lived in as much as admired. [Photography: Adam Scott]
