A few apartments manage to inspire with inventive, space-conscious design; others show how traditional styles can be refreshed for modern life. This picture-perfect three-bedroom apartment in Hammersmith and Fulham, London is a fine example of both approaches. Occupying approximately 1,300 square feet, the home was crafted by Black and Milk Interior Design to meet a family’s need for a creative, elegant and refined living environment.
From the moment you enter, the apartment’s predominantly white backdrop reads like a blank canvas, allowing carefully selected patterns, textures and colors to stand out. The design approach favors a curated mix: bespoke pieces, layered accessories and functional furnishings combine to give each room its own personality while maintaining a cohesive, tranquil atmosphere throughout the home.
The living area centers on a low-slung white sectional paired with a custom coffee table that anchors the space without overwhelming it. Opposite, the dining zone features a striking marble-top table that becomes the visual focal point, surrounded by playful seating that keeps the space contemporary and approachable. Tableware and vases introduce nature-inspired prints and subtle botanical motifs that harmonize with the clean, modern lines of the furniture.
Bedrooms are intentionally neutral yet lively: striking wall art provides color and focal interest while softer tones, textiles and carefully chosen accents keep the spaces calm and restorative. One bedroom’s headboard wall is punctuated by a large artwork that elevates the simple bedding and complements the room’s contemporary feel. Indoor plants and curated lighting further personalize these private rooms while maintaining a crisp, uncluttered aesthetic.
The apartment also includes a refined home office finished in white with a dark-gray desk and a custom chair in a matching hue. This calm, practical workspace blends seamlessly with the overall scheme and provides clever storage and shelving solutions that suit city living. Thoughtful built-ins and bespoke joinery throughout the apartment maximize usable space while preserving clean sightlines and a sense of openness.
What I loved about working with them wasn’t just their passion and vision, but that they really embraced how I wanted to use the space and what would work best for my family. Olga and Toly work directly with furniture makers so many of the pieces in this project are custom, designed specifically for the smaller proportions of city living.
Custom elements are a recurring theme: several furnishings were designed specifically for the apartment to suit its proportions and to add functional details that off-the-shelf pieces often lack. Bespoke decor introduces color, pattern and texture, while carefully selected lighting enhances mood and highlights architectural features. The result is a home that feels polished yet lived-in, modern but warm.
The children’s rooms are playful and practical. One features a bunk bed with a built-in play area and adjacent bookshelves that make the most of vertical space, while another uses a light-blue palette, wallpaper accents and a gray feature wall to create a soft, cheerful retreat. These rooms demonstrate how considered design can balance fun, storage and durability for an active household.
Overall, the apartment is a study in balance: neutral foundations allow bold details to shine, while custom solutions make everyday life easier in a compact urban home. It’s a polished, family-friendly residence that proves thoughtful design can make even modest square footage feel spacious, functional and distinctly personal.
