Discover Sustainable Luxury in this Modern Rustic Retreat

When most people picture a rustic weekend retreat, they imagine a simple cabin or a modest stone cottage. The LS House, however, redefines that notion. Perched on a lush green lot about 180 km from Mexico City, this remarkable weekend home by Luciano Gerbilsky / RED Group fuses traditional Mexican materials and motifs with bold contemporary forms to create a singular architectural statement. From a distance the house is defined by slanting rooflines and dark stone walls built from locally sourced volcanic rock, a combination that gives the structure strong, grounded presence while remaining visually elegant.

The house’s layout amplifies the dramatic roof geometry: a sequence of volumes and pitched roofs stacks upper and lower levels to create private and social zones that relate to one another visually and spatially. The upper volumes contain the master suite and guest bedrooms, while the ground floor opens into the primary social areas—the living room, kitchen and dining space—which flow outward to a generous outdoor terrace. There the exterior program continues with an al fresco dining area, a lounge, a pool and a Jacuzzi, so the indoor and outdoor spaces are experienced as an integrated whole.

Inside, finishes and furnishings are carefully chosen to celebrate local craft and materiality. Custom wooden details and printed textiles reference vernacular Mexican design while lending warmth to the interiors. A standout element is an inventive living-room centerpiece that doubles as a coffee table and a fireplace, a playful yet functional object that anchors the social area. Antique furniture and hand-crafted pieces are interspersed with clean-lined contemporary elements, creating a layered and inviting atmosphere.

Bathrooms at LS House are deliberately expressive, with custom copper bathtubs, generous glazing and carefully placed plantings that bring a spa-like calm to private routines. Antique vanities and bespoke mirror frames introduce texture and history, while glass walls allow natural light and greenery to become part of the bathing experience.

One of the most striking architectural gestures is the seven-meter-high glass wall that conceals a water mirror; this water surface becomes a cascading waterfall that flows beneath the main entrance. A curving staircase rises above the water, framed by abundant planting, and together these elements produce a memorable entry sequence that blends light, movement and landscape.

LS House also embraces sustainability: photovoltaic panels provide hot water for both the house and the Jacuzzi, while a rainwater harvesting system and graywater recycling reduce demand on local freshwater supplies. The project’s construction approach prioritized materials and techniques that lower its carbon footprint, making the residence both beautiful and environmentally conscious.

Outdoors, terraces and gardens are treated as extensions of the interior program. Landscaped courtyards, an outdoor hangout area and a pool make the property ideal for social gatherings or quiet retreats. The careful placement of greenery softens the volcanic stone and the angular rooflines, reinforcing a dialogue between architecture and landscape.

In sum, LS House is an elegant reinterpretation of the rustic weekend home: it honors local materials and traditional crafts, offers generous, carefully composed living spaces, and integrates sustainable systems that respect the landscape. The result is a memorable retreat that is as comfortable and welcoming as it is visually powerful.
