Fairlight House: Contemporary Coastal Design with Cheerful Flair

Fairlight House — A Contemporary, Refined Beach Home by Decus Interiors

Fairlight House is a rare example of a contemporary beach home that balances elegance and restraint. Redesigned inside by Decus Interiors and originally built by Luigi Rosselli Architects, the house preserves the subtle European sensibility of its architecture while introducing a calm, modern palette and carefully considered materials. The interior follows a predominantly black-and-white theme, punctuated by jewel tones and soft pastels that bring warmth and personality without undermining the overall minimal, refined aesthetic.

The living room demonstrates how decisive details can define a space. A black, steel-framed partition subtly delineates zones while echoing the linear grid of the windows, creating cohesion between architecture and interior fit-out. That industrial-leaning framework is softened by minimalist furnishings and a careful selection of textures: a dark blue sofa anchors the seating area, supported by a low emerald coffee table with a bronze top that introduces a metallic, tactile contrast.

In the kitchen, strong black cabinetry is balanced by white surfaces and marble countertops, producing a timeless black-and-white composition. A large dining table painted a vivid blue makes a deliberate, cheerful statement within the otherwise restrained scheme, proving how a single saturated color can lift a neutral palette and create a focal point for daily family life and entertaining.

Storage and bespoke joinery play an important role throughout the project. Custom wooden cabinets in the living, dining and bedroom areas provide generous, integrated storage while doubling as display surfaces for books and objects. These warm timber elements temper the monochrome base and introduce an approachable, lived-in quality that prevents the interiors from feeling austere.

Bedrooms maintain a neutral backdrop, with bedding and soft furnishings providing the color accents—muted pastels and soft textures that encourage restfulness. Small, well-chosen bedside tables and sconce lighting define intimate moments and make efficient use of tighter spaces, while the overall restraint in pattern keeps the rooms calm and cohesive.

Bathrooms continue the black-and-white narrative with marble finishes that introduce luxury and a tactile quality. Clean lines and pared-back fittings keep the spaces contemporary, while material choices—stone, timber and metal—inject warmth and depth.

“Cognisant of the Northern Beaches location, we set a clear intention to avoid creating an archetypal ‘beach house’ design. The architecture by Luigi Rosselli Architects is European in sensibility, so, working within this structure, we developed a pensive, restrained colour palette layered within a selection of rich, bold materials.”

That intention is evident throughout: a considered avoidance of obvious beach-house clichés allows the project to sit comfortably within its Northern Beaches context while remaining sophisticated and curated. The restrained palette, skillful use of timber and metal, and a few strategic pops of color result in an interior that feels both contemporary and enduring.

The photography by Justin Alexander captures the material contrasts and the deliberate simplicity of the interiors, highlighting how light, shadow and carefully chosen accents give this Fairlight House its quietly confident character. Overall, the project demonstrates how contemporary coastal living can be achieved through restraint, thoughtful detailing and a measured use of color and texture.
