Wairau Valley House: Concrete Home Clad in Eucalyptus Saligna

Every time we study homes and interior inspiration from New Zealand, the landscape takes our breath away. The Wairau Valley House, set a few minutes from Blenheim and sited to overlook the Wairau River and the valley beyond, is a fine example of a residence designed to celebrate its setting. Parsonson Architects wrapped this home in concrete and Eucalyptus Saligna, creating a deliberate contrast between the warm, tactile qualities of timber and the clean, sculptural presence of concrete. The result is a refined contemporary home where indoor and outdoor living are seamlessly connected.

The main living area is deliberately open: the kitchen, dining space and lounge flow naturally onto the deck and pool. This unbroken sequence of rooms emphasizes sightlines out across the garden and toward the valley, so the landscape becomes an active part of daily life. A concrete fireplace anchors the living room, while half-walls and simple partitions define separate zones without interrupting daylight or the sense of openness. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls and large sliding doors extend the footprint of the home, making indoor-outdoor access effortless and encouraging cross-ventilation. On warmer, infrequent summer days the pool helps cool the house and reinforces the feeling of a home that breathes with its environment.

Natural light is a defining feature throughout the house. In the kitchen, glass set into the corner eliminates shadowed workspaces and keeps the room visually light and inviting. Timber joinery and Eucalyptus Saligna surfaces introduce warmth and texture, balancing concrete’s minimalism and creating an interior that feels both calm and richly layered. The bedrooms are arranged to provide quiet and privacy, positioned to take advantage of views while remaining secluded from the main entertaining areas.

Linear roof coupled with gabled roof forms to create a gorgeous contemporary home

Architecturally, the house blends simple roof forms—linear planes paired with gables—to create a contemporary silhouette that sits comfortably in the rural landscape. Sheltered walkways and covered patios link volumes and outdoor rooms, creating a sequence of protected and open spaces that can be used year-round. Carefully placed planting and a series of curated gardens frame views, define outdoor rooms and soften the transitions between building and land.

Inside, the compositional pairing of wood and concrete continues. Clean concrete walls and hearths juxtapose with warm timber ceilings, floors and cabinetry to form interiors that feel both robust and welcoming. Built-in shelving and considered storage solutions maintain an uncluttered aesthetic while providing practical function. Sliding glass walls at multiple points in the plan blur boundaries, so a morning in the kitchen, an afternoon by the pool or an evening in the living room all feel connected to the broader landscape.

The Wairau Valley House demonstrates how thoughtful material choices, careful siting and a strong indoor-outdoor connection can produce a home that feels both contemporary and timeless. The use of durable concrete provides a neutral, enduring backdrop while Eucalyptus Saligna introduces warmth, texture and a local character. The plan is generous with daylight, views and sheltered outdoor spaces, creating a residence that reads like a retreat: comfortable, elegant and fully connected to the expansive valley it overlooks.
