Glass and Metal Addition Modernizes 1920s Phoenix Bungalow

Foundry12 transformed a classic bungalow in Phoenix, Arizona into a light, contemporary home that celebrates indoor-outdoor living. The team added a sleek glass-and-metal extension to the existing red-brick structure, creating a striking contrast of textures and eras. Known as Twenty-Three 02, the addition introduces a modern sensibility while respecting the original bungalow’s scale and character—its dark exterior and crisp lines are balanced against the warmth of the brick and the deep tone of the existing roof.

The addition—measuring approximately 800 square feet—draws inspiration from industrial and container-style architecture through its generous use of metal and glass. Inside, the extension houses a refined walnut-and-marble kitchen and a serene master suite that opens directly onto a private courtyard. Large framed glass walls and swiveling doors erase the boundary between inside and outside, making the courtyard feel like an extension of the living space. The result is a relaxed contemporary interior that complements the bungalow’s original elegance.

Natural light plays a central role in the renovation. A gabled roof paired with skylights fills the interior with daylight, creating airy, open rooms where living, dining and kitchen areas flow together. Where the original carriage-house architecture brings texture and history—exposed brick and classic proportion—the new volume introduces clean, modern lines and an industrial edge. The neutral palette throughout emphasizes materials like walnut, stone and metal, letting texture and light define each space.

The kitchen is a focal point: warm walnut cabinetry is paired with marble surfaces to create a sophisticated yet approachable cooking and gathering area. Metallic pendant lighting and thoughtfully selected fixtures add subtle sheen and tie into the extension’s industrial material palette. The open plan enhances sightlines to the courtyard, so the kitchen feels integrated with both indoor living and outdoor entertaining.

Outside, the compact backyard and deck have been reimagined as comfortable outdoor rooms. A small courtyard with a fireplace creates an intimate gathering spot, while a hammock and open deck areas encourage relaxation and casual outdoor living. The bedroom and bathroom in the new wing open directly to the private yard, enhancing privacy while strengthening the connection to nature.

Throughout the home, exposed brick walls and carefully chosen finishes preserve the building’s original character while new elements introduce contemporary clarity. Where the old meets the new, the design favors restraint—clean lines, a cohesive neutral color scheme and abundant daylight—to create interiors that feel both lived-in and modern.

To summarize, the renovation at Twenty-Three 02 demonstrates how a carefully designed modern addition can enhance an older home without overwhelming it. By pairing glass and metal with brick and wood, the project achieves a balanced dialogue between past and present. The generous use of natural light, the seamless indoor-outdoor connections, and the considered material choices result in a home that feels contemporary, comfortable and uniquely responsive to its Phoenix context.
