Porcelanosa Grupo 2017 Awards: Architecture and Interior Design

As every year, the PORCELANOSA Architecture and Interior Design Awards celebrated the most inventive minds in architecture and interior design at the Palacio de la Bolsa de Madrid. The 10th edition of the awards put creative design in the spotlight, recognizing outstanding projects across three categories while showcasing the best of Porcelanosa’s materials and finishes.

All entries were judged in three categories: Future Student Projects, Future Professional Projects and Completed Projects (submissions from both students and professionals). In addition to category awards, two special lifetime-achievement honors recognized Juan Antonio Gómez Pintado and Emilio Tuñón for their long-standing contributions to architecture.

The competition highlights the intersection of innovative architecture and the latest building materials from the Porcelanosa Group. Finalists and winners demonstrated how contemporary ceramic tiles, solid surfaces and engineered materials can shape functional, beautiful spaces. Below are three standout projects from this year’s winners and finalists that drew attention for their design excellence.

Future Projects: Students

Inmaculada Piqueres Díez & Augusto González Bello

The winning student project came from Inmaculada Piqueres Díez and Augusto González Bello, graduates of the Advanced Infoarchitecture program at the School for New and Professional Technology CICE in Madrid. Their proposal reimagines a modern office as four distinct volumes, each with its own finish and function, arranged around a central courtyard. The courtyard anchors the scheme and introduces abundant natural light, while Porcelanosa ceramic ranges such as Par-Ker and XLight provide strong textural contrast and durable surfaces throughout.

The scheme organizes eight functional zones: a large reception hall, two meeting rooms, open office areas, documentation and service zones, toilets, a dining room and a compact kitchen. A careful balance of glass, tile and wood creates a productive, ergonomic and calm workspace—an adaptable office that combines aesthetics with function and accessibility.

Completed Projects: Standout Residences and Hospitality

Gras Arquitectos

One of the most striking completed projects honored at the awards is a hilltop residence by Gras Arquitectos that uses KRION® Solid Surface in Snow White to dramatic effect. Perched above the coast, the house appears to float above the landscape, framed by a minimalist façade and expansive overhangs. KRION’s continuous, seamless applications create sculptural elements, including the pool edge, outdoor kitchen and interior surfaces, while providing hygienic, non-slip finishes suitable for bathrooms and wet zones.

The porcelain and solid-surface applications continue through the kitchen, bathrooms, dining area and a bespoke home gym. Large terraces and a pool deck offer panoramic views and comfortable outdoor living. The project demonstrates how contemporary materials can unify architecture and landscape while delivering refined, low-maintenance surfaces for everyday living.

Galmeìs i Mansergas Arquitectes

Another standout completed entry is a new residential wing for a seaside hotel designed by Galmeìs i Mansergas Arquitectes. The scheme links six independent units through a network of walkways that preserve privacy while maintaining fluid circulation. A façade clad in wooden slats and carefully designed lighting gives the building a warm, contemporary presence at night, while interiors highlight Porcelanosa’s VENIS NEWPORT tiles and KRION surfaces.

The design palette blends ceramic tiles with concrete, limestone and marble, balancing durability and tactile richness. Bedrooms, bathrooms and terraces benefit from non-slip tile finishes and custom KRION fixtures—washbasins, sculptural bars and integrated surfaces that demonstrate the flexibility of modern solid-surface systems.

Across all categories, the awards highlighted projects that combine thoughtful architecture with high-performance materials—showing how modern tiles and solid surfaces can elevate both residential and commercial design. From student concepts to realized homes and hospitality spaces, the Porcelanosa Awards continue to celebrate innovation, material research and creative design solutions.
