Bright, Airy Renovated Home in Portugal with Colorful Design

Aging houses that need a makeover do not always benefit from a single rear extension into the backyard. Successful renovations require careful planning and precise execution: understanding the homeowner’s needs and the structural limits of the original house is essential. Tucked into a busy neighborhood of 1970s and 1980s houses in Coimbra, Portugal, the AA8 Small House has been thoughtfully renovated by Branco-DelRio Arquitectos. The compact 112-square-meter dwelling now feels fresh, bright and intelligently organized, with clever space-saving solutions and a playful touch of color.

The renovation pursued three main goals: create a new bedroom and a full bathroom on the upper floor, improve the connection between indoors and outdoors, and maximize usable space within the modest footprint. To achieve these aims the architects introduced a generous use of timber across walls, shelving and built-in cabinetry, which brings warmth and texture to every room. These wooden elements provide a deliberate contrast with the existing concrete finishes, while large glass walls and sliding glass doors visually and physically open the interior to the backyard.

Space efficiency is a recurring theme throughout the project. Modular and flexible systems have been incorporated to open up new circulation and ventilation possibilities while keeping the footprint compact and practical. In the main living area, multifunctional furniture and integrated storage reduce clutter and maximize floor space, allowing the home to feel larger than its square meter count might suggest. The dining area doubles as a workspace, demonstrating how adaptable layouts can support contemporary life in a small house.

Natural light plays a major role in shaping the interior atmosphere. Skylights, glass partitions and the large sliding doors flood rooms with daylight, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day and highlighting the textures of the materials used—especially the warm grain of the wood finishes. The wooden ceiling, headboard wall and built-in joinery create a cohesive interior language that feels both modern and cozy.

One of the most distinctive design choices is the use of vivid yellow as an accent throughout the house. These pops of yellow—apparent on doors, window frames and selected furnishings—inject a cheerful energy that enlivens an otherwise neutral palette. Small, carefully placed color accents bring rhythm and personality to the interiors without overwhelming the restrained material scheme.

Overall, the AA8 Small House renovation demonstrates how careful design can transform a modest property into a bright, efficient and attractive home. By combining warm wood finishes, exposed concrete, generous glazing and well-placed color accents, the architects preserved economical solutions while creating an interior that feels open, contemporary and distinctly welcoming.
