Tavonatti House’s Inverted Floor Plan Maximizes Ocean Views

Tavonatti House by PAR Arquitectos in Cachagua, Chile

Cachagua is a peaceful coastal town in Chile where sun, sand and surf combine to create a restorative escape. In this serene setting, PAR Arquitectos designed the Tavonatti House, a contemporary residence that takes full advantage of distant ocean views while fitting sensitively into local building norms. The scheme inverts the traditional layout: public spaces — living room, kitchen and dining — are placed on the upper level to open onto a generous wooden deck overlooking the sea, while the lower level contains the bedrooms and private areas, concealed and protected from view.

Inside, the house embraces a modern coastal aesthetic. A palette of crisp whites and shades of blue is balanced with varied wood tones that introduce warmth and texture. Pine wood ceilings and panelling run through the home, lending a natural, inviting character to the architecture. Rather than competing for attention, the understated interior finishes and furnishings direct focus outward, encouraging occupants to enjoy the views and natural light.

Careful attention to environmental comfort is evident throughout. Smart ventilation strategies and light-filtering systems reduce direct heat without compromising daylight, allowing the interior to remain cool and bright in a temperate coastal climate. The top-level living spaces open seamlessly to the exterior deck, creating a continuous indoor-outdoor flow that is ideal for relaxed coastal living and entertaining.

The architecture is composed of two simple volumes arranged to respond to the sloping, sunken site and to frame the panoramic outlook. A cantilevered upper volume shades the lower terrace and sitting area, providing sheltered outdoor space and reinforcing the house’s layered relationship with the landscape. Walkways and bridging elements connect the various parts of the plan, creating a cohesive yet varied sequence of spaces that unfold toward the ocean.

Interiors favor open planning and generous sightlines. Open shelving and thoughtful storage solutions keep circulation areas clear while offering display space for personal items. Bedrooms on the lower level are designed as restful retreats, outfitted in soft blues and natural textures that reinforce the coastal theme and provide a calming atmosphere at the quieter end of the house.

In response to a sunken site with a gentle slope and glimpses of ocean, the program elevates the main living level by overlapping two volumes of simple lines to create a new spatial dimension. The first volume, oriented toward the bay views, serves as the access and contains the public spaces.
