When the owners of the 1950s Mosi House signed the renovation contract, they could scarcely imagine how completely the property would be transformed. The South African firm Nico van der Meulen Architects delivered a sensitive, sophisticated redesign that brings contemporary urban character to a classic mid-century home while honoring its original form.
The brief called for an urban aesthetic without erasing the house’s history. The project focused on a single-storey residence with four bedrooms. The architects reorganized the plan around a clear separation of public and private areas, introducing a generous pool that serves as both a visual and functional divider. A long, elegant bridge connects the living spaces to the private wing, creating a dramatic and practical spine through the property.
To reinforce the urban-meets-domestic concept, the design incorporates large sliding, stackable doors at the interface between interior and exterior spaces. These doors blur the boundary between inside and out, allowing the pool courtyard and garden to become an integral part of everyday living. The openness promotes cross-ventilation and natural light, reinforcing a comfortable, modern environment while preserving the home’s original footprint.
The interior was curated by M Square Lifestyle Necessities, who focused on a considered balance between contemporary and traditional elements.
