Playful Colors Revive Melbourne Case Study House

Many suburbs of Melbourne still feature mid-century Case Study Houses that appeal to young couples and growing families moving into the city. The Family Framework, designed by Sibling Architecture, was originally one of those modest mid‑century homes. A thoughtful, inventive renovation transformed it into a light-filled, color-rich dwelling tailored to busy urban life. What stands out immediately is the striking use of color blocking against a predominantly white backdrop. Vivid hot pinks, lively oranges and bold reds punctuate the interior, creating a contemporary yet eclectic atmosphere that feels both playful and intentional.

Outside, a new pergola with a grid framework extends the living area and provides shelter from summer heat. The pergola’s eye‑catching pink lattice acts as a focal point in the backyard while also connecting visually to the interior. That same grid motif is repeated inside: a custom metal shelf descends from the ceiling above the kitchen worktop, and a bespoke bench in the living room echoes the lattice geometry. The metal framework is finished with bright splashes of color, reinforcing the home’s lively character.

The renovation also reconfigured the plan to open up sightlines and maximize daylight. New windows and a more generous layout allow natural light to sweep through the kitchen, living and dining zones, making the interior feel larger and more connected to the backyard. The kitchen benefits from increased openness and the suspended metal shelf provides useful storage without interrupting the visual flow.

Color is applied strategically throughout the home to define zones and inject personality. A bright blue floor and matching storage units bring cheer to a section of the interior, while a vivid orange segment gives the bathroom a contemporary edge. These bold color blocks sit against largely white backgrounds so they read as deliberate accents rather than overwhelming the rooms.

The open social zone blends living, kitchen and dining areas but still offers flexibility. A movable partition separates the dining area — which doubles as a homework or study zone — from the main living space when privacy or focused activity is needed. This practical solution keeps the plan adaptable for family life, allowing the house to shift between social entertaining and quieter routines.

This renovation balances whimsy and function.
