A truly exceptional modern home strikes a careful balance between form, function and personality. Designed by Gordon Weima, House Addition is a striking contemporary residence in Ottawa that achieves that balance with a refined neutral palette and bold textural contrasts. The design pairs cool whites and soft grays with warm wood tones and sculptural materials so each room feels cohesive yet visually engaging.

The living room sets the tone for the home’s layered approach. A marble fireplace wall sits alongside a warm wooden accent wall that houses the entertainment center, creating an elegant counterpoint between cool stone and richly grained wood. The palette leans toward white and gray, but material contrasts—smooth marble, textured wood and soft fabrics—prevent the interior from feeling flat. A round mirror, a gilded pendant and a plush sectional introduce additional texture and metallic accents, and a thoughtfully chosen coffee table completes the seating area without overwhelming the calm, open layout.
On the other side of the open plan, the kitchen presents a polished, contemporary aesthetic. A central island topped in a gleaming white surface is paired with wood-clad cabinetry to bring both function and warmth to the space. Glass pendant lights hang above the island, offering a refined focal point while providing task lighting for cooking and casual dining. Streamlined storage and concealed appliances maintain a clean silhouette, allowing the mixed materials and lighting to do the visual work.
The formal dining room occupies its own volume and offers a different atmosphere: a white backdrop that highlights a dramatic Woods wallpaper, creating texture and visual depth. This separation of dining and living functions helps each area maintain its identity while preserving an overall sense of openness and flow.

Outside, a generous patio extends the living space with room for alfresco dining and an outdoor lounge sheltered beneath a pergola. The exterior uses the same neutral, layered approach found inside—clean surfaces, natural wood, and comfortable furnishings—so the transition between interior and exterior feels seamless. Thoughtful shading and comfortable circulation encourage relaxed gatherings and everyday enjoyment of the outdoor area.

Functional circulation and thoughtful material choices continue through the entry and stair volumes, where a white foyer leads up to wooden stairs with a glass railing that keeps sightlines open and the interior bright. These transitional spaces emphasize the home’s commitment to a light-filled, airy experience while allowing the richer textures to appear as deliberate accents rather than distractions.

Bathrooms and powder rooms follow the same design language: pared-back white surfaces balanced with warm wood cabinetry, elegant fixtures and carefully selected finishes. A floating wooden vanity paired with a white countertop and gold-toned faucets adds a boutique feel to compact spaces, turning even small rooms into refined, tactile experiences.

The private bedrooms and quieter spaces occupy the top floor, providing separation from the more social, public zones downstairs. This arrangement supports both everyday family life and entertaining, while abundant glazing and careful orientation ensure rooms feel bright and naturally ventilated. Overall, the home reads as contemporary and comfortable—clean lines and minimalist restraint are tempered by rich, tactile accents so the environment is both elegant and welcoming.
