VO House: A River-Valley Retreat Near Villeta, Colombia
Villeta, whose name means “little village,” sits away from city lights and the daily rush, yet it offers far more than its name suggests. Perched above the valley formed by the Villeta and Tobia rivers, VO House is a striking weekend residence designed to take full advantage of its dramatic site. Built as a single-level holiday home to ensure easy accessibility for older family members, the house accommodates large gatherings with five generous bedrooms arranged in a private wing to the west and a spacious, open-plan living, kitchen and dining wing to the east. The combination of expansive interior spaces and seamless outdoor connections makes this retreat both luxurious and deeply connected to nature.

Architects Baquerizo Arquitectos designed VO House to frame the spectacular landscape with extensive decks, a generous pool terrace and an internal courtyard that open the home to sweeping valley views. The layout emphasizes continuity between interior and exterior: living, dining and kitchen areas unfold toward the pool and deck, while bedrooms are tucked into a quieter, private wing. Large glazed openings and covered outdoor living spaces give occupants a sense of being immersed in the surrounding greenery while providing protection from sun and rain.

A defining feature of the design is the evocative “fire and water” composition at the pool area. Two low stone walls frame a fire pit placed beside the pool, producing a powerful visual contrast between flame and reflecting water. This deliberate arrangement creates a focal point that reads differently throughout the day and into the evening, offering warmth and atmosphere while anchoring the outdoor social spaces.

Materials are chosen to root the house in its place. Stone excavated during construction was reused in many of the home’s walls, providing texture and a direct material connection to the site. Complemented by sleek modern finishes and generous glazing, the combination of local stone and contemporary detailing produces a warm, elegant aesthetic that complements the landscape rather than competing with it.

Functional design choices reinforce the house’s role as a family retreat. The extended roof over the living areas provides shade on hot summer days, while the pavilion-style arrangement of kitchen, dining and living spaces allows for easy, sociable flow between cooking, relaxing and outdoor entertaining. The deck connects directly to these shared spaces, blurring the boundary between indoor comfort and outdoor leisure and creating an ideal setting for gatherings of several families.

Details throughout the home emphasize relaxation and sensory experience: a hammock for afternoon naps, generous terraces to drink in dawn and dusk, and warm, considered lighting that transforms the house after sunset. The pool and terraces serve as daily stages for quiet contemplation and lively socializing alike, while the landscape beyond provides a continual changing backdrop—in misty mornings, sunlit afternoons and star-filled nights.

The design intent is straightforward and effective: solve an extensive architectural program in a simple, sensitive way that relates to nature and place. Spaces are continuous and serene, easily personalized with the owners’ furniture, art and objects, and arranged so the house can accommodate both large family gatherings and quiet retreats. The result is a refined vacation home that balances comfort, accessibility and a deep connection to the valley landscape.

“The virtue of this project is to be able to solve an extensive architectural program in a simple way relating with nature and the place, providing continuous and serene spaces that can be easily customized with the inclusion of the owners’ furniture, accessories, objects and works of art.”
