An island retreat that opens up sweeping views of green hills and blue sea while surrounding you with modern comforts, the Island Rest is a family-friendly holiday home designed for relaxation and connection. Created by Ström Architects, this contemporary residence sits on a sloped lot on the Isle of Wight with commanding views to the English Channel. Rather than fight the terrain, the design embraces it: one end of the house is anchored into the ground while the other projects outward on stilts in a refined cantilevered composition. The result is a striking, flood-resilient home that feels light on the landscape while maximizing coastal vistas.
The public areas — open-plan living, kitchen and dining — occupy the projecting end of the building, arranged to flow into one another without interruption. Large sliding glass doors dissolve the boundary between inside and out, framing coastal views and inviting the garden and pool area into the living space. Bedrooms are organized for clear separation: guest rooms and children’s bedrooms cluster to one side of the living area, while the master suite occupies a private wing at the cantilevered end. This layout preserves privacy while keeping communal spaces generous and bright.
Outside, a dark timber-clad exterior allows the house to sit quietly within the countryside and to become more discreet after sunset. Inside, light contemporary tones and abundant timber finishes create a warm, calm backdrop that complements the surrounding greenery. The wooden ceiling and floors bring texture and continuity, providing a comfortable contrast to the darker kitchen backdrop and the black-stained external façade.
The grounds are composed to feel natural and relaxed. The garden flows into the wider landscape with mown paths through wildflowers and a simple pool and outdoor seating area that afford both play and repose. Low stone walls and planted borders articulate the approach to the house and frame views back toward the channel. These outdoor spaces are modest and understated, designed so the landscape and sea views take center stage rather than the architecture.
The interiors balance material warmth with restrained, contemporary detailing. Timber-lined walls and ceilings and soft, integrated lighting create an intimate atmosphere in bedrooms, while the open social spaces retain a breezy, coastal quality. Large glazing and sliding doors ensure that each room benefits from natural light and long views towards the English Channel, reinforcing the home’s connection to the surrounding environment.
Island Rest is an understated, elegant holiday house where architecture supports and celebrates the outdoors. The careful siting, material choices and the cantilevered form all work together to create a comfortable, resilient home that frames views of the English Channel and invites family life to unfold in both indoor and outdoor rooms.
