Renovated Luxury Mansion in Amsterdam: A Modern, Elegant Family Home
Amsterdam’s historic streets and refined architecture set the scene for some of the most beautiful residential transformations in Europe. In this case, the owners of a pair of older houses asked bnla architecten to merge two separate units into a single, luxurious and contemporary family residence. The result is a carefully considered renovation that balances timeless elegance with modern functionality—an Amsterdam home that feels both opulent and warm.

The central challenge of the project was to harmonize two distinct staircases from the original houses into one efficient, modern stairway. That new stairwell becomes a unifying spine through multiple levels, channeling natural light and improving circulation. Throughout the interior, large windows and sliding glass doors were strategically introduced to brighten rooms and reinforce a connection with the outdoors. These adjustments transform previously compartmentalized spaces into an open, inviting home that reads as a single, cohesive mansion.

The basement has been reimagined as a relaxed family zone: a comfortable sitting area, a playroom with a foosball table and social spaces that invite family interaction. This lower level is designed for everyday living and entertainment, with easy visual and physical access to the landscape beyond. Thoughtful lighting, a fireplace and a plush seating arrangement create a cosy, communal atmosphere suited to both kids and adults.

On the main floor, the kitchen becomes the home’s heart. A spacious layout features a dramatic custom island, dark cabinetry, and a breakfast bar that supports casual meals and socialising. The kitchen opens directly onto a covered deck and balcony, giving it an indoor-outdoor quality that enhances daylight and views. In several areas a restrained black-and-white palette anchors the contemporary aesthetic while details like textured wallpaper and classic finishes create contrast and depth.

The stairwell, now a central architectural feature, channels daylight deep into the plan and visually links the home’s multiple levels. Its placement and proportions were carefully considered to improve sightlines and to make movement between floors effortless. Natural materials and a neutral palette throughout the stair and circulation zones keep the design calm and cohesive.

The master suite is a refined blend of traditional character and contemporary comfort. The bedroom area retains classic proportions and detailing, while the en-suite bathroom channels a spa-like sensibility with a freestanding tub, elegant fixtures and serene blue-and-white accents. Small, considered touches—such as a delicate side table in classic blue next to the bathtub—add personality without overwhelming the tranquil scheme.

Alongside the kitchen and living spaces, a dramatic dining area features a wallpapered backdrop and generous views, making it ideal for family dinners and formal entertaining. Throughout the house, the design strategy balances dark, dramatic accents with light, airy surfaces—resulting in an interior that feels both dramatic and welcoming. The renovation blends the existing historic fabric with contemporary interventions to deliver a polished, practical and highly livable family home.

The overall renovation is a polished combination of aesthetics and practicality. By consolidating two properties into a single modern, elegant mansion, the design team created more cohesive circulation, improved daylighting and flexible family spaces that suit contemporary life while respecting the building’s original character.
