A beach house should invite relaxation and offer moments of unexpected beauty. Tamarama House, set in one of Sydney’s most desirable coastal neighborhoods, delivers both. Redesigned by Decus Interiors, this 1940s apartment has been updated for a Sydney-based fashion blogger, and the renovation reflects the resident’s personal style and refined preferences. Each room balances calm sophistication with a modern, pared-back aesthetic that nods to classic beach style without feeling literal or contrived.
On entering the apartment, a sense of lightness and urban elegance is immediately evident. The design relies on a restrained palette and carefully chosen materials to create contrast and warmth while keeping the overall backdrop contemporary. Calacatta marble countertops anchor the kitchen and dining area with their dramatic veining, while washed plywood cabinetry and shelving add a softer, tactile quality. Polished brass fixtures and pendant lights introduce a warm metallic shimmer that complements the natural tones without overwhelming the rooms.
The living space is composed to feel both relaxed and curated. A monochromatic base—soft whites and warm neutrals—creates a calm canvas for art and accessories. Statement pieces, such as a darker wooden credenza, provide depth and focal points within the scheme. Those darker tones are used sparingly and intentionally, set against lighter surfaces to preserve the airy, coastal atmosphere that makes the apartment feel open and inviting.
Practical design choices are woven throughout the apartment. A mirror-front pantry door reflects light and visually enlarges the footprint, while thoughtful, space-saving furniture preserves circulation and function. The kitchen island combines warm wood with the polished drama of Calacatta marble, forming a central element where cooking and casual dining naturally converge. Carefully selected kitchenware and understated accessories enhance the kitchen’s minimal look without creating clutter.
The bedroom continues the apartment’s refined calm. A mostly monochrome palette and white sheer curtains create an atmosphere of quiet luxury, letting natural light filter softly while maintaining privacy. Curated artwork adds personal character and color, so the space feels lived-in rather than staged. The result is a serene retreat that aligns with the apartment’s overall aesthetic—understated, well-considered, and quietly elegant.
Throughout Tamarama House, the design team married modern minimalism with coastal touches to create a home that feels both contemporary and timeless. Materials—Calacatta marble, warm woods, washed plywood, and brass—are repeated in different combinations to provide cohesion while avoiding monotony. Lighting is considered and layered, with pendants and subtle fittings that enhance texture and mood. Small details—the selection of cushions, sculptural décor on the credenza, and the placement of art—bring personality and vibrancy to the neutral foundation.
The renovation of this beachside apartment demonstrates how thoughtful material choices and restrained styling can transform a compact space into an elegant, functional home. The result is an inviting coastal retreat that reflects the homeowner’s personal taste while remaining versatile and enduring in design.
