Collector’s Loft: Modern Brazilian Apartment with Iconic Art

Some homes let their walls steal the show, others rely on a breathtaking view, and many urban apartments inspire through smart, space-conscious design. Rarely, however, do you find a residence that reads like a private museum—filled with custom décor, timeless furniture and original artworks by international masters. The Loft of the Collector in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil is exactly such a space. Designed by TRPC Arquitectos, this compact apartment feels more like an elegant, living art gallery than a conventional home.

The apartment measures just 60 square meters, yet its layout feels generous and fluid. A renovated open plan places the living room at the center, with a streamlined single-wall kitchen along one edge and the sleeping area opposite. At the heart of the plan, a formal dining area doubles as a flexible gathering spot—equally suited to intimate dinners, work sessions, or showcasing a rotating selection of artworks. The designers favor a restrained palette: white surfaces and raw concrete combine with a coral velvet effect in varying hues to create a backdrop that is neutral, textured and warm at once.

What truly defines the loft, however, are the individual furnishings and art objects. Carefully curated pieces such as the Palência coffee table by Víctor Angueira, the Bo armchair by Giacomo Tomazzi, and the Frei Egídio chair originally by Lina Bo Bardi punctuate the living area with distinction and history. These iconic designs are treated not merely as seating or tables, but as sculptural elements that contribute to the apartment’s layered visual narrative.

Every corner reveals considered detail. Shelving and display surfaces mix modern industrial elements with softer textures, hosting books, decorative objects and framed works that together form a cohesive collection. The bedroom, though modest in size, is intentional and refined: deep green walls create an enveloping, restful atmosphere while charcoal-gray textiles reinforce the sophisticated palette. Even in the compact sleeping area there is space for a Hans Wegner Valet chair—an elegant testament to how classic design can be integrated into small, contemporary interiors.

Neutral backdrop coupled with greenery gives the home a fabulous setting to display gorgeous art pieces

Natural light and greenery visible from the windows complement the interior’s neutral tones, bringing life and contrast to the curated collection. Subtle, layered lighting—recessed fixtures, accent lamps and carefully placed LED strips—enhances texture and highlights focal pieces without overwhelming the space. The lighting strategy amplifies the gallery-like quality of the apartment while ensuring warmth and comfort for daily living.

The kitchen is a study in efficient elegance. A single-wall layout maximizes floor space while a glossy, colorful backsplash introduces a playful counterpoint to the apartment’s otherwise restrained finishes. Under-counter LED accents create a soft glow that emphasizes the stone backsplash and highlights the kitchen as an integral part of the open plan, not a separate utility zone.

The loft demonstrates how careful selection and placement of objects can transform a compact apartment into an immersive environment. Far from crowded, the interior feels intentionally sparse in some moments and richly layered in others—always with a strong sense of rhythm and balance.
