Bohemian Beach House on Tybee Island: A Modern Coastal Retreat
Tybee Island, the northeastern-most of Georgia’s Sea Islands, provides the perfect backdrop for a modern beach house designed to slow the pace and celebrate coastal living. Commissioned by a couple from Atlanta and realized by Rethink Design Studio, this island home blends a relaxed beach aesthetic with subtle West Coast bohemian touches for a fresh, inviting interior.
Stepping inside, you encounter a calm, cozy atmosphere anchored by a palette of white, wood, and soft blue accents. The designers prioritized natural light and simple lines, allowing materials and textures to create depth rather than bold patterns. The living areas flow together with a relaxed, open feel that highlights the home’s connection to the surrounding landscape.
The dining nook is practical and charming, featuring built-in banquette seating that maximizes space while creating an intimate area for meals. Behind the dining area, a compact kitchen is both efficient and attractive. Wood cabinetry, open shelving, and a metallic finish on appliances provide a gentle contrast to the prevailing soft tones, and sliding barn-style doors add an element of rustic farmhouse character without overpowering the coastal aesthetic.
Throughout the home, exposed wooden ceiling beams provide texture and warmth. These architectural details punctuate the ceilings and complement wooden furniture, woven baskets, and natural fiber rugs that reinforce the coastal-bohemian mix. The careful layering of materials—from painted white walls to reclaimed wood surfaces—makes the rooms feel collected and relaxed rather than overly styled.
The bathrooms continue the same restrained approach: streamlined fixtures, a thin wooden vanity, and woven baskets for storage that introduce organic texture while keeping the rooms airy. Fixtures are chosen for clean lines and longevity, supporting a modern lifestyle without sacrificing warmth.
Bedrooms use a soft, coastal-inspired color scheme—light blues, pastel greens, and warm neutrals—to create restful sanctuaries. Minimal nightstands and balanced bedside styling keep the spaces symmetrical and uncluttered. Layered textiles such as lightweight throws and linen pillows introduce subtle boho character while remaining true to the serene beach house mood.
White paint and natural wood surfaces are consistent throughout the house, reinforcing a restful visual base that makes accent colors and curated décor pop. Accent pieces—such as woven wall hangings, rattan chairs, and potted greenery—add personality without competing with the view or the overall tranquility of the interior.
Small, thoughtful seating areas and a cozy reading nook invite slow afternoons and quiet evenings—precisely the kind of spaces you want in a beach house designed for relaxation. The overall design communicates a clear intention: comfortable, functional living that feels effortless and lived-in. This is a home that looks as if it evolved over time, with each piece chosen to contribute to an understated coastal-bohemian narrative.
On Tybee Island, where the rhythm of life is set by tides and sandy walks, this modern beach house captures the essence of island living while offering contemporary comforts. Rethink Design Studio’s approach—clean white backdrops, natural wood details, soft pastels, and curated bohemian accents—creates a serene retreat that is both stylish and welcoming.
