Project Ö: Self-Sufficient Twin Cabins on a Finnish Archipelago Island
Perched on the edge of a five-acre island within the Finnish Archipelago National Park, Project Ö comprises two self-sufficient cabins that celebrate the rugged charm and raw beauty of the archipelago. Designed by Aleksi Hautamäki and Milla Selkimäki of Bond Creative Agency, the twin cabins follow a clean Scandinavian aesthetic: warm timber facades contrasted by gabled roofs clad in matte black. The location offers seclusion and panoramic coastal views while the design emphasizes comfort, functionality and a close connection to nature.
The interior layout favors long, narrow, open-plan living spaces where kitchen, dining and lounge areas flow into one another. Generous windows, floor-to-ceiling glass doors and well-placed openings maximize daylight and natural ventilation while framing views across the water. One end of the main living space is arranged for socializing and entertaining; the opposite end accommodates sleeping quarters, including a children’s sleeping area. A sequence of indoor and outdoor zones blurs the boundary between shelter and landscape, allowing the natural surroundings to become a constant presence inside the cabins.
In the kitchen, matte black shelves and cabinets provide visual anchor points while timber surfaces add warmth and tactile contrast to the restrained interior palette. The careful, minimalist finishes reinforce the Scandinavian feel and keep the focus on natural materials and thoughtful detailing. Built-in storage and ergonomic shelving preserve floor space and maintain a calm, uncluttered environment suited to short stays or extended retreats.
Project Ö is also designed to be environmentally sensitive. The cabins incorporate renewable-energy solutions such as solar power, along with water-recycling measures and efficient heating and cooling strategies that help the buildings adapt to seasonal changes. These systems are integrated into the overall design so the houses operate with a light ecological footprint without compromising comfort.
Outdoor living is given equal importance. Steps lead down to waterside decks and terraces where outdoor dining and relaxation areas orient toward the sea. These exterior spaces extend the living zones and create sheltered spots for enjoying sunrise, sunset and the ever-changing archipelago light. Careful siting of windows and terraces ensures privacy while making the most of the surrounding landscape.
The overall composition blends traditional Scandinavian simplicity with contemporary functionality. Custom black finishes, timber cladding and efficient spatial planning combine to create a cozy, modern retreat that respects both the island’s natural character and contemporary expectations for comfort and sustainability.
