Mexican Brick and Wood Home with Spacious Open Living

We all dream of a weekend retreat that offers a calm contrast to the everyday rush. Casa Linda Vista, a spacious vacation house overlooking Lake Chapala in Mexico, delivers precisely that. Designed by 3Arquitectura, this smart and elegant home blends vernacular architectural principles with locally sourced materials and generous use of wood to create a warm, inviting escape. The design emphasizes an effortless indoor-outdoor relationship: the pool, deck and exterior spaces form the heart of the home’s social life.

Inside, the house opens into a generous, open-plan living area where kitchen, dining and lounge zones flow together. Large sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling glazing create a seamless transition between interior and exterior, framing views and allowing natural light to animate the spaces throughout the day. The living area’s coffered wooden ceiling brings texture and richness to the volume, while exposed brick walls add warmth and tactile character. The rear façade opens to the landscape and lake views, while the street-facing side remains discreet and private, preserving a sense of shelter and tranquility for residents and guests.

The architects prioritized locally available materials and traditional construction systems, which helps the house sit comfortably within its context and supports local craftsmanship. Natural stone, brick and timber are employed not just for their aesthetic qualities but for their durability and connection to place. These choices produce a restrained, contemporary palette that feels both modern and rooted in local building traditions.

Landscape and existing vegetation were carefully preserved, minimizing the project’s ecological footprint while strengthening the relationship between the built and natural environments. Outdoor areas—the deck, the garden and the pool—are conceived as extensions of the living room, offering multiple settings for socializing, relaxation and appreciating the lake scenery. The deck in particular acts as an outdoor living room, shaded and sheltered yet openly connected to the view.

Interior finishes emphasize natural textures and a restrained color palette that highlights material authenticity. The coffered wood ceiling pairs beautifully with brick and stone surfaces, creating layers of visual interest without overwhelming the senses. Bathrooms and service areas are crafted in complementary materials, with stone-clad walls and glass elements that feel contemporary yet timeless.

Large glass walls and sliding doors not only frame lake views but also allow for cross-ventilation and a close sensory connection to the outdoors—sounds, smells and breezes become part of the living experience. At night, the rear elevation opens to the sky and landscape, offering a dramatic interplay between interior light and the surrounding dark, while the street-facing elevation maintains a quieter, more private presence.

The implementation of a traditional construction system with the use of local stone materials, gives us as a result a project that is strongly adapted to the context and favors the development of the trades of the community. This materiality is reflected in a large gable roof formed by a geometric grid that contains the public space…

Overall, Casa Linda Vista represents a thoughtful holiday home that values craftsmanship, material honesty, and a strong connection to landscape. It achieves a comfortable balance between open communal spaces and private retreats, offering a relaxed environment where architecture and nature complement each other. The preserved vegetation, careful material selection and considered spatial planning make this house a quiet, refined lakeside refuge.
