Brighton Residence: A Thoughtful Renovation in Melbourne
Smart renovations are not always about adding more rooms or enlarging the footprint. Sometimes the most effective updates are those that simplify, improve daily life and create a clearer connection to the outdoors. The Brighton Residence, located in a quiet modern neighborhood of Melbourne, is an elegant example of this approach. Redesigned by Jacobs Thomas & Associates for a retired couple, the project prioritizes simplicity, efficiency and a relaxed indoor-outdoor flow while preserving the home’s original character.
The design carefully retains the heritage street façade, allowing the classic frontage to remain unchanged and maintain the neighbourhood’s streetscape. Behind that preserved veneer, the new rear extension opens into an airy, open-plan living area that flows directly into the garden. Large sliding glass doors anchor this indoor-outdoor relationship, making the backyard feel like a natural extension of the main living space and filling the interior with daylight.
Inside, the living area, kitchen and dining zone form a cohesive, light-filled heart of the home. The palette is predominantly neutral and bright, which enhances the sense of space and calm. Carefully chosen contemporary accents—such as warm brown décor elements and vivid wall art—add visual interest and personality without overwhelming the simple scheme. Stone countertops and polished open shelving give the kitchen a modern, tactile quality while keeping lines clean and functional.
A standout element is the large picture window located in the dining area. It frames views of the garden and brings natural light deep into the plan, benefiting both the dining space and the adjacent kitchen. That framed greenery becomes part of the interior composition, softening the minimal palette and providing a calm, ever-changing backdrop throughout the day.
Practicality and comfort guide many of the spatial decisions. At the far end of a long open corridor, slim floating desks provide neat, unobtrusive workstations that face the garden. These simple timber surfaces create ergonomic spaces for reading, correspondence or light office work while staying visually integrated with the rest of the home. Large glass walls and generous glazing ensure the couple can work with tranquil green views and abundant daylight.
Bedrooms and bathrooms follow the same restrained approach: transitional furnishings, considered splashes of color and an emphasis on daylight. A vivid orange drawer adds warmth and character to a white bedroom, serving as a focal point without disrupting the overall calm. The bathroom is bright and predominantly white, designed to feel cheerful and uncluttered with natural light enhancing its clean surfaces.
The Brighton Residence demonstrates how a restrained, well-considered renovation can breathe new life into a classic house. By preserving the heritage façade and concentrating modern intervention behind it, the architects achieved a balance of tradition and contemporary comfort. The result is a practical, elegant home tailored to the needs of its owners—one that emphasizes daylight, garden connections and uncomplicated, stylish living.
