Contemporary Yucatan Vacation Home Perfect for a Staycation

Contemporary homes increasingly blend the comforts of a vacation retreat with the functionality of a modern residence. A staycation avoids long trips, heavy traffic and high travel costs while creating relaxed, shared moments at home. When a property includes a generous yard, a wooden deck and a pool—like the Ancha House in Yucatán, Mexico—the experience of staying home can feel like a true holiday. Designed by Augusto Quijano Arquitectos, this refined contemporary residence was created for a couple whose children no longer live at home, allowing the architects to embrace a more open, streamlined program.

The layout favors an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. A long, open living area serves as the central spine of the house, with the dining space and kitchen at one end and the bedroom zone at the other. Wide glass doors and walls frame views to the front yard and connect seamlessly to the wooden deck and pool, encouraging movement between interior rooms and outdoor spaces. The private rooms are located toward the rear of the plan, intentionally buffered from the more public, social areas.

Architectural elements are used deliberately to manage light and temperature. A large overhang shades the open living room from direct sunlight, creating comfortable covered outdoor seating while reducing glare and heat inside. The covered edges of the home make the pool deck usable through much of the day, while generous openings admit breezes and natural light without sacrificing privacy.

Outdoor furnishings are restrained and contemporary, with lounge chairs and compact side tables that support casual poolside relaxation without competing with the architecture. In the evenings, subtle lighting transforms the deck and yard into an inviting alfresco dining and lounging area, making the outdoor spaces usable and atmospheric after dark.

Inside, the great hall forms the heart of the home. A neutral palette of gray and white gives the interiors a calm, polished feel, while artwork and carefully chosen furnishings provide color highlights and visual interest. Wider partitions and streamlined cabinetry add texture and depth without overwhelming the serene backdrop. The overall décor remains intentionally understated so the eye is naturally drawn toward the yard and pool beyond.

The kitchen reads as bright and contemporary, appointed in white tones and organized for casual everyday use. A breakfast bar provides a relaxed spot for morning coffee or light meals, while maintaining visual connection to the living and dining spaces. The bedroom areas continue the refined, neutral scheme, creating quiet retreats that emphasize comfort and simplicity.

Large sliding glass doors reinforce the connection between interior and exterior, allowing the pool and yard to feel like extensions of the living space. The street-facing façade presents a composed, confident presence, while the interior organization and landscaped exterior deliver the relaxed privacy this program required. A floor plan included in the project documentation clarifies how the living, sleeping and service areas relate to one another, with the outdoor courtyard and pool acting as organizing elements.

Calm, contemporary and thoughtfully arranged, the Ancha House offers a clear model for designing a home that supports extended relaxation at home. By prioritizing a strong indoor-outdoor connection, simple material choices and an uncluttered interior, the project demonstrates how architectural decisions—overhangs for shade, sliding glass doors for openness, and well-lit decks for night use—can turn an everyday house into an ideal staycation retreat.
