Australian Concrete, Timber and Metal Home Shows Inventive Design

Often the landscape determines a home’s shape, carving spaces that respond to local climate and topography. The Escarpment House, designed by Takt Studio in Thirroul, Australia, is a clear example of a residence that embraces its coastal setting. Perched above a sweeping coastal landscape, the house draws inspiration from the layered geology of its site. A striking black concrete slab forms a stable base, while timber, concrete and metal articulate the building’s volumes and interiors. Australian Red Cedar, locally sourced stone and natural timbers create a varied, tactile palette that reveals itself as you move through the home.

The client for the Escarpment House requested a home that would support working from home while remaining fully integrated with family life. The architects responded with a clear split of functions: private spaces—bedrooms, a study and a library—are located on the upper level, while the lower level accommodates public living areas such as the kitchen, dining and lounge, along with service zones. This arrangement keeps work and living activities distinct yet connected, allowing the household to function comfortably without sacrificing privacy or daylight.

Exterior timber cladding wraps parts of the house to afford privacy and soften the massing, while carefully positioned openings filter light into the interior rather than exposing it outright. The rear façade is deliberately oriented to connect with the backyard and broader landscape, ensuring that interior spaces read as continuations of the site rather than isolated volumes. Natural materials—Australian Red Cedar, local stone and other timbers—bring warmth to the concrete and metal structure, creating a balance between rugged coastal resilience and refined domestic comfort. Elevated platform the house sits on ensures that the base remains stable in the coastal landscape

Structurally, the house sits on an elevated platform and black concrete slab that respond to the coastal terrain and provide a robust, durable base against wind and sea air. From this base, various materials and forms rise to define the living and private spaces. The design uses generous glazing and sliding doors to open the interior to light and views, while internal layouts and corridors—often detailed in timber and metal—offer moments of enclosure and acoustic separation where needed.

Inside, the material contrasts become a prominent part of the experience. Smooth polished surfaces in bathrooms contrast with the warmth of timber joinery and the rawness of exposed concrete. The house includes carefully considered joinery and hardware, from purpose-built timber door furniture to robust steel door jambs that meet concrete columns. These details emphasize durability and craft and help the home resist the coastal environment.

Intensely customized, it features purpose built timber door furniture, handmade steel lights, steel door jambs against the concrete columns, and a FC clad bathroom as a counterpoint to the recent land release developments of limited variability in the area. As such its creation relied upon the skills of local craftsmen – flaming and quenching the raw steel tube lights in hot oil to protect them from the elements and crafted timber details seen throughout the house such as the light brackets…
