Lakefront Minimalism: A Manchester Home by Alina Sulina Designs

Started in 2021 and currently in progress, this lakefront residence in the suburbs of Manchester is being completed by Alina Sulina Designs. Positioned to look out over a peaceful body of water, the home’s interior design takes direct inspiration from its surroundings. The studio’s approach—an elegant balance of functionality and minimalism—has been applied here to align the design with the owners’ lifestyle and their love of art and entertaining.

From the earliest planning stages, the surrounding landscape informed every decision. With living room windows framing the waterside view, the design team embraced the idea that the landscape itself should feel like an element within the interior. Large openings, simple sightlines and restrained detailing allow the outside to become part of the home’s atmosphere.

The homeowners are passionate about art and hospitality, and the interior reflects both priorities. The layout addresses entertaining needs by providing a mix of open social spaces and more intimate niches. A dedicated bar zone was created to host smaller gatherings and conversations—an area designed for making drinks, displaying glassware and enjoying relaxed moments with close friends.

Materiality plays a central role in the project. Decorative plaster on the walls creates a tactile, slightly rough surface that nonetheless reads warm and inviting; the chosen plaster tones recall sand and autumnal light rather than bright summer hues. Travertine, textured metal and softly finished wood are used alongside the plaster, creating a layered palette of surfaces that invite touch and reward close inspection. These combinations—plaster, stone, metal and wood—are chosen to echo the shoreline textures and natural materials visible outside.

Lighting and color are carefully considered to counter Manchester’s often-muted climate. The palette favors deeper, gentle tones—warm beiges, soft ochres and muted greens—that conjure a sense of sand warmed by late autumn sun. These colors, combined with local warm light and thoughtfully placed artwork and sculptures, produce a nest-like interior where texture and form create comfort and visual interest without excess.

Functionally, the residence is arranged on one level, approximately 1,350 square feet, and includes a flowing open-plan kitchen and dining area, a comfortable lounge, a private cinema space and the intimate bar. Each zone is distinct yet connected, allowing guests to move freely while preserving smaller pockets for conversation and art viewing. The cinema offers a cozy retreat for film and media, while the living areas are composed to emphasize comfort and curated objects rather than clutter.

Every design decision supports the owners’ lifestyle: art display, comfortable entertaining and a connection to the lake beyond. The result is a restrained, refined lakefront home that celebrates natural textures, considered materials and minimalist detailing — an interior that feels both modern and warmly familiar.
