Most modern neighborhoods separate homes from commercial spaces, and many people prefer not to live directly above a shop. Some find it intrusive to live above a busy business, while others dislike the constant activity outside. The owner of IDUMI Cafe + Residence embraced a different approach: the personal home occupies the two floors above a modest street-level café. Designed by Tenhachi Architect & Interior Design, the project sits in a lively area of Tokyo and presents a calm, understated presence on the street.
From the exterior, the café announces itself with restraint: a minimal logo on the façade rather than an elaborate storefront. Inside, the interior is defined by warm timber, clean lines and a restrained modern aesthetic rooted in traditional Japanese design principles. Exposed wooden beams, carefully chosen furniture and an emphasis on natural materials create an intimate, welcoming environment. Strategically placed indoor plants and generous daylight reinforce a sense of calm, offering patrons a quiet escape from the surrounding urban bustle.
The café balances texture and simplicity: handmade lamps and understated lighting highlight the grain of timber and the smoothness of terrazzo surfaces. Brass accents add a subtle, refined contrast to the wood, elevating details without disrupting the calm atmosphere. Seating choices—wooden stools, simple chairs and neutral furnishings—keep the focus on material quality and craftsmanship rather than visual clutter.
Above the café, the residence occupies two levels and is organized as a multi-generational home with three flexible living areas. The layout is designed for adaptability, allowing spaces to shift according to changing needs—whether to provide private bedrooms, shared family zones or quiet workspaces. Thoughtful details such as terrazzo flooring, brass fittings and crafted lighting fixtures give the living areas a tactile, layered feel that complements the café below.
Throughout the residence, a neutral backdrop allows wooden furniture and architectural elements to stand out. Natural light is used generously to animate rooms and highlight materials, while the restrained palette helps unify the café and home visually. The connection between the commercial ground level and the domestic spaces above is handled with sensitivity: each realm maintains its own atmosphere while contributing to a cohesive whole.
